Of course I have come across Type 2 MCBs in old installations but trying to buy replacements has never been easy. Does anybody still use these on new installations?

No,because a new installation would be fitted with current spec materials. An addition or alteration to an existing install might well involve fitting old spec mcb's in an older CU to supply the addition or alteration.
