I am coming to an end of my Level 3 2365 Course. I am interested in doing my NVQ, but you need to be working in the industry to build up the portfolio. As I am still looking for someone to take me on as an Electrical Trainee. Despite me:

  • Contacting Companies
  • Registering with the Electrical Agency's
  • Applying for jobs on Jobsites
  • Visiting Wholesalers and giving them my CV.
  • Applying to Housing Associations
  • Applying to Apprenticeship vacancies on JTL and the Government website
So I am unsure what to do as a Level 3 is no good on its own. Any advice on what to do next?

Whilst you're awaiting maybe get a testing qualification like the 2391-52. Or do the 2392 then the 2391.
Apart from what you're already doing it maybe worth getting your name around family friends & start doing some jobs for them to build up a little experience.

It can be a long drawn out process, someone at college waited over a year to get his break , it will come I recon but it can be a long drawn out process and need a bit of luck.
Best of luck though hopefully something will arise...

I thought about doing the testing, or the 18th but I am not working at the moment or I would have put my name down to do them. I have been doing bits for family. I would just rather work for a company as I have been trying for nearly a year now to get someone to take me on, it's not easy. I am not even bothered about pay to be honest, more the experience.

We are in the same boat. Completed level 3 and 18th edition regs. Planning to do 2391 in September if the college get enough student to run it.
Sadly you'll only get a break in the industry if you have a relative who is already in the game and willing to take you under his/her wing.
Domestic is saturated. The moment you utter the word experience to a one band (wo)man, he/she will look at you as a threat (competitor).
Com/industrial are scared about the duration of time they take to explain things to you.
It's catch 22 really.
Good luck.

I was in the same boat but in between level 2 and 3. I found doing my ECS H&S exam and getting someone to vouch for you to get a labourer card, plus doing IPAF scissor lift and cherry picker course really really helped get me a commercial electricians mate gig.

Hope it all works out, keep at it and you’ll get your shot one day :)
