you may need to replace the transformer with an LED driver. That thing outputs a.c. wheras most LEDs require D.C.the differnece is here without techy bowlocks.

Damn. Really? I was hoping only to spend a few £ on bulbs. Is the worst that'll happen that the LED bulb will blow ? In that case I'll try LEDs and then go back to halogen if not.
There would be 3 transformers to replace otherwise.
 
So long as your LED lamps load the transformer with more than 10W (and less than 60W) it will probably be OK. It would be surprising if the LEDs got damaged, the most likely problem would be flickering and/or a bit of noise.

If you have a problem with the LEDs, replacement transformers don't cost much. This one at Amazon, for example..
