Hi there,
I'm trying to wire an extractor fan (Manrose 4" / 100mmm with timer)
I don't have too much knowledge about Electricity but I'm very keen to install it myself and learn too.

I don't wish to connect the fan through a light switch rather directly to the wall

Now the fan has 3 connectors as usual in UK [L, SL, N]
The wire has 3 colours [Brown, Green-Yellow, Blue]
The plug on the other side has [L, E, N]

So this is what i have done;
The blue wire goes into N and N in both the plug and the fan
The Brown wire goes into the L and the L in both the plug and the fan
Now, the Green-Yellow wire goes from the E in the plug to the SL in the fan
L => L N => N E => SL

After testing this, whenever connecting the fan, the blades moves slightly then stop.
Not sure if this is a settings related to the timer or my wiring is wrong.

The timer has a button to adjust though, I have turn it all around all points but no changes in the fan behaviour.

Can anyone help me understand and resolve this please?

NO !! Do not do this. SL is switched LIVE

Im guessing you didn't read the instructions?

Hi James, I didn't have it with me and looked on the internet for it but couldn't find it, where shall I connect the SL in the plug please?

You need to connect live to L then put a link across to SL with blue to N. You only need a two core cable.

Thanks mate,
So, this is what I understood now:
# L (from the fan ) ----> L (in the plug)
# N + S/L (together from the fan ) ---> N (in the plug)
# .................. So what goes to the E in the plug?

Hope I understood your message well.

No do not connect N and SL together. Connect a brown wire between L and SL at the fan, connect the brown from the cable to either L or SL at the fan it doesn't matter which one as you have connected together. Blue from the cable to N at fan. In the plug connect brown to L and blue to N, nothing need to go to earth at the plug, you need a two core cable.

Oh Actually i think i got it now,
So two core cable from the fan into a dual pin plugin then a convertor from the 2 pin plugin to 3 pin plugin.
Is that right?

No use a three pin plug with a 3A fuse but use two core cable to L and N.

Thanks a million.
I followed your guide and now the fan works fine.
You're a legend.
