I have a problem with a toilet light fitting. I have attached a picture of the wiring in the ceiling. This is exactly how it was when I looked at it. The cable with the black and red coming from is the live feed. So the cable with the red and blue wires should be the switch cable. The problem I have is that the cable from the string pull switch is red and black. I cannot get a circuit with the blue and red cable. If I connect the two reds in the block I get a short.

Any help appreciated.

Best way to check which one is the switch wire is to switch off the supply and use a continuity tester and voltage indicator of some sort to establish exactly whats what.

Edit
Sorry just re read your post.

Is the yellow definatley an earth?

Possibly a J/B somewhere.Sounds like it may have been added or extended at some point. Is there a fan connected to this as well.Looked like a fan in the corner of the picture

Hi yer Richtrucker,

Here are my thoughts based on your picture...

It looks like you have a 2-core & cpc ...plus a 3-core & cpc

The two cpcs appear to be twisted and enclosed in the same g/y sleeving
The yellow of the 3-core& cpc appears to be connected to the cpcs.
Could it be that this 3-core & cpc feeds the adjacent fan and when you connect the 2 reds together you are effectively causing a short through the fan, as this yellow wire will become live via the timer fan electronics circuit and you have the other end connected to the cpcs .....does this seem a possibility?
You could have the cable from the pull switch popped up into the ceiling out of sight

spark1 :(

i think spark1 is on the right track i just wonder why a 3c was taken to the fan as there is no perm live at the light
unless the 3c is the feed in and the twin goes to the fan and its via a humidi stat
so 3c red to twin red blue to black neutral to light and switch wire yellow to light

Is there a isolator for the fan, that is fed permanent. Just a thought.
