136.4 ohms at lights whilst doing the loop test before we change the board. Guessing they've been lucky ? Plus side is I get to put an earth stake in were see how much I remeber from the one I did 2 years ago

I went to a job today and started to test the lights. First of all my tester kept saying 0v so i ignored it and went to another light same thing next one same thing and so on. Getting a bit annoyed I went back and said the testers being funny and not giving a reading. Of i go again this time setting it at 2000ohms instead of 20 which I normally use. It works but ive just seen 136 odd on the screen. Alarm bells are ringing lol but Ive got an idea that a tt might be higher then the 7 something im use to it having to be within. From the thread Ive gained the information that it has to be equal to or less then 200 ohms.
anyway ive had to put in an earth rod (im not sure why from this thread as if its less then or equal to 200 ohms its fine) it was fed by 10mm earth cable and the only thought on its location was position (close) and the technical bits (measurement from the window) and guessing part (where the foundations finished) decided where it went (in between driveway block paving)
After doing all of that it went down to 83 ohms pretty much, more then half of what its ok to be?

1stfix I feel for you mate it sounds to me like your boss is taking the mick, you should not be left alone to try and work things out for yourself if you don't feel confident in your work.
Maybe it is time to look for someone who could be a better mentor for you.
I know you need to learn some things yourself sometimes but you also need a good teacher to guide you along the way.

This forum is losing any credibility by the day. I don't know who to believe anymore.
Its amazing how so many electricians see this <200 ohm figure as a target, a bit like speed limits everyone aims for the figure on the sign!
when I worked for firms they would never give us the stock to be able to install more than one rod, I had a disagreement with more than one foreman about this, and came back with a figure of 400 ohms once,
They tried to convince me I'd tested it incorrectly and that it had to have been sub 200, in the end I wouldn't budge and they gave me more rods, I got the figure down to 30 something ohms with what I'd got .
Then 6 mths later the nic inspection comes up and he chose this and 2 other jobs all TT he was not happy as the certs said <200 and they retested one was over 400 the other 2500 ohms the guy said "the ground is wet now were you 3ft under water when you tested this?"
he then stood there and grabbed the rod and pulled it out
It was @500mm long!
Some very red faces there and my job for the next 6 weeks was to revisit a load of jobs to test and do it properly.....
I thought sod that and left a few weeks later to go work for someone else who had a clue!

Lofty if I'm honest you scare the living crap out of me mate and I don't think it's your fault. You're being messed on from a great height, this guy is using you as if you were a skilled person but no doubt because of your lack of quals and experience he is able to get away with paying you peanuts.
In your position I'd be looking around for another fix very, very hard because sooner or later the wheel is going to come off this applecart and where that leaves you legally I have no idea nor desire to find out.

my advice to the op is do as much reading on theory/regs as possible then read some more! don't believe everything your told check it for yourself there are plenty of books and internet resources which will help you
Your obviously working for a firm that is more interested in making money than in training you how to do a proper job!
Educate yourself and start looking for a job with a better firm who will explain things

You come on here for some advice having passed the 2330 and 17th edition. Questions that seem to annoy people so much it results in a ban.
You loose your job as an electrician even tho you've passed the 2330 , 17th edition as well as put into practice all you learnt doing the 2 days a week you managed to get with yours class mates dad
you come on here asking questions a sparky should know (fair enough) but your genuine you've done the 2330 17th edition and all that you were taught by the guy you work with (typical something new game up ) you get banned and told to give it up.
you can't find another job and ain't really that keen incase you come up agaist something again you've never seen.

How is banging in a earth rod out of my depth. Pick hammer up bang in ground. I don't think my questions help but they do me. I'm not mad keen to pick up a book and read about all things electrical which is obviously my biggest downfall. I'll never be able to compete with someone like that unless I'm shown the right way to do something every single time regardless of cost or time and encounter every possible scenario that I might come across multiple times as I'm pretty much monkey see monkey do and then I just store the information. Can't see why I can't just ask my questions and get taught from the answers of here.

When I started people gave me a lot of stick because I was pretty clueless about basic practical wiring, I'd never done it or been shown how.
I was good on the regs and theory but at that point it was difficult relating things to make sense, also I got shown and told stuff which was utter crap!
I used to ask a question then check the answer and slowly your knowledge will build up, and before long you'll leave these muppets behind.
The firm your with now just see you as a pair of hands, but you can use them to your advantage too by doing what I said before, this way you'll be reading how to do things correctly even if they don't do things this way , but keep your own standards higher and it'll come together
Ps re rods for domestic/small installations personally I run 16/10mm to the rod as you've described and bang in the 5/8 screw together rods down in as far as the ground permits and test it to see what reading you are getting
I keep on putting them down to get a reading below 15ohms although I wouldn't lose sleep if the best it could get to was 50ohms the most I've done this way was 14 down which gave me a reading of 3 ohms
If the ground is hard you may have to install joined rods in other positions and link with the earth cable basically building up a network of rods spread out which increases the surface area , giving a low reading
If there is rock close to the surface this will be best done by digging out an area of soil and taking the wire to an earth mat (basically a copper mesh) there are other methods mentioned in this thread also

I agree, I don't have a problem with you asking questions. What I do have a problem with is when I see someone getting shafted by someone who should know better than to put that person in a position he is ill equipped to deal with. When I see that then yes I'm going to tell that person that he's getting shafted and I refuse to apologise for that.

I've had this guy out working with me for a day a couple of months back. And considering he had only done domestic work before that day I was suitably impressed with the way he kept up with me on the last setup day of a small music festival.
Keeping up with me doing my best juggling act is no easy task!
I also have had a run-in with the outfit he is working for in the distant past, and I can guarantee that is where all his problems are stemming from. They have quite a bit in common with British gas!
He is a decent bloke who is willing to learn and just needs the opportunity to work with a decent electrician, and ideally out of the domestic sector for a while.
If I was in a position to take him on on a regular basis I happily would, but when half of my work is outside of the electrical installation world and every spare penny is tied up in another business venture I just can't do it at the moment.

A point worth remembering is clay can work in 2 ways,if you have a layer of clay then yes it will hold water in the soil above it,however this soil will dry out in hot weather thereby increasing the resistance,however if you penetrate the clay by using a longer rod very often you will find the soil below it is permenantly damp giving a lower resistance.
