Socket added in loft to lighting circuit - unearthed

I recently had CCTV installed and the contractor installed a plug socket in my loft, spurred from the lighting circuit - which is unearthed. He added a four-plug extension lead to take the plugs for the four cameras. Is this safe? Or should I be concerned? Many thanks for any advice and help. Karen

    Lighting Circuit Fault

New Member and wannabe electrician. I'm teaching myself for now for obvious reasons. My problem is an extension light circuit and the conundrum is: The circuit will only work / operate from the main circuit breaker. As soon as I wire a switch into the circuit it will not stay on and...

Lighting circuit controlled by a time clock and photo cell through a contactor

Hi gents, I am going to a job to install some new external lighting on a factory on Monday. There are 5 new circuits to run in total. They want these to be controlled by a time clock an photo cell but also run through a key switch and contactor. It’s been some time since I wired contactors and...

    Lighting circuit from an RCBO

Hi, I'm fitting a new lighting circuit into my garage consumer unit that will feed 2x outside wall lights. I plan on using a two way circuit to have an external switch and one located inside the house. The attached picture is how i plan on wiring but i have one question about the Neutral feed...

    AM2 lighting circuit

Hi got AM2 in a few weeks, on the build there’s a 2 way and intermediate to wire up, I know how to wire one up but the way they want it doing is not the way I have ever done or the way I would do it, you need a neutral at every switch, from DB to first switch in T+E then 3 core to intermediate...

    Lighting circuit from ring main

I expect it's a big no no but is it permissable to create a new lighting circuit ( just for one light ) from a spur off a ring main?

No CPC on lighting circuit ............

OK, lets have a decent discussion about this as I'm sure there will be a number of opinions! Have done an EICR on a 40 + year old flat. The lighting circuit is wired in singles and utilises the steel conduit as the CPC. Out of the 6 lights and using my R2 wander lead, only 2 have an acceptable...

No cpc to lighting circuit, no rcd protection 50 year old wiring

Hi just thought I'd throw this out here for a bit of light entertainment after the @Marvo thread (phew!) So brother in law asked me to look at EICR which returned unsatisfactory. I have not looked at the installation to ascertain as to Class 1 or 2 fittings in the premises are installed. The...

    Lighting Circuit r1+r2 values.

Hi, I was doing my r1+r2 tests on a lighting circuit yesterday in a 6 bed house over 3 floors. Approximately 20 points not including switches. Mainly pendants but some light bars etc and almost all LED or low energy halogen type bulbs. Closed circuit r1+r2 values range from 0.88 on ground...

Domestic Lighting Circuit Methods In New Builds

To my knowledge, there are 3 methods of splitting the line conductor in each lighting circuit: Joint box below floor, or above ceiling Three terminal ceiling rose/batten lampholder Joint in switch box (neutral) I am wondering which method is most commonly used in new houses. I have been in...

    2.5mm Lighting Circuit

If someone has run a 2.5mm lighting circuit spurred from a ring final on a B16 breaker, I am assuming there is no need to have a fused spur where the lighting circuit comes off the ring final?

    Inductance on lighting circuit

i installed a new CU yesterday. During testing I noticed 15-30v on the 2-way lights circuits while off. I traced this back to cables being run together and caused by inductance. I can't separate the cables. Should I worry about this, anything I can do? Thanks, Michael

Electrician Jobs Switch for entire lighting circuit?

my eldest son has autism and learning disabilities. One of his behaviours is messing around with lights - either switching them on and off rapidly for a few seconds or going around switching on all the lights in the middle of the day. Yes, we could go into the kitchen cupboard and use the mcb...

    junctionbox in pub lighting circuit?

Hi all, I am rewiring the lighting circuit in an old pub. It wasn't until running the new cable that I discovered the circuit branched off to a porch light through a junction box under the floorboards. This is where the circuit originally shorted out. I've completed the rest of the circuit and...

No Spare Way for Shower Can Move Doorbell to Share Lighting Circuit or put Doorbell on Switch Spur?

Hello, New builder and Electrician started today to wire-in electric shower to wire already in place for it. They phoned to say that the new consumer unit that old builder's Electrician put in, which is a 10-way, has no spare way for the shower cable which wasn't wired in. I spoke to old...

    high r1+r2 on lighting circuit

    Lighting Circuit Trip Problem

Hi Guys Help! The 6 amp MCB for a downstairs lighting circuit keeps tripping, sometimes instantly, sometimes slowly. An IR check live to earth gives >200 Meg on the 250 Volt range (I don't want to blow up the dimmers!) when all light switches are OFF! This reduces to near short circuit when you...

What would be your method? New lighting circuit

Evening, I am rewiring my house and would like to put spotlights (around 10) in my kitchen. I was thinking loop in at the switch (from previous rose and to rose in next room) and then run the t&e cable (l,n & cpc) from one spot to the next to the next. Is this correct? (Usual caveat- I'm still...
