As the 17th Ed Regs state that all junctions need to be located in an accessible place, what is the deal with low voltage transformers for downlights? Many come with screw type connections so is the recess/hole for the downlight classed as accessible? If so, couldn't you just put a small choc-block & box near a downlight fitting if you needed to put a junction for something else in the ceiling space?

Also, with regards floorboard-recessed uplights... what are the recommendations for locations of the LV transformer? Obviously dangling the transformer from the light fitting itself is a no no, and it would be near impossible to mount/demount if it was secured to a floor beam.

Accessibility through the down lighter hole is acceptable however the junction should incorporate strain relief on all cables. You will also have to make sure that the transformer is away from the fitting to ensure that it is not damaged by heat during operation. Regarding the floor lights, what lamps are you planning to use? I would expect them to be an LED unit or a maximum of 20W to ensure the fitting is F marked. One option would be to mount the transformers away from the fittings (in a cupboard for example) and run ELV cabling to the fitting. Make sure you take in to account the volt drop which will be far more critical on a 12V supply, for this reason and also because i would prefer the fittings to be as cold as possible to minimise the possibility of charring or injury to the customer i would spec LED units.
