Hi,

I've just recently changed a C/U that had a supply to a garage via 2 core 2.5mm SWA. The cable on the old set up was coming from a main switch that was seperate from the house c/u. The garage has a small c/u supplying 1 socket and some lights.

I havn't reconnected the garage supply because i'm not sure if it is going to comply with 17th Ed. I've got a new c/u for the garage that has RCD protection and the new c/u in the house is also fully RCD protected.

Would it be justifiable to put the supply cable on its own circuit in the new house c/u where it is RCD protected and use the SWA for earthing?? Is a 2.5mm cable big enough?? The garage won't have any big loads, probably just the lawnmower.

I'm trying to get this job sorted so I can use it as an example for inspection, any feed back would be very helpful.

If your supply is not coming from the house CU which is fully RCD protected then your unit in the garage will need RCD protection for any sockets fitted if not a ring ensure to put it on a 20A mcb.

What is protecting the 2.5m cable coming into the garage.

I have a new c/u for the garage which has RCD protection (yet to be installed). The 2 core 2.5mm SWA only had the protection of the main switch and was burried in the ground.

I'm happy that the garage circiuts will be RCD protected once in install the new c/u, but does the SWA from the house to garage need RCD protection? And is 2.5mm sufficient enough as the supply?
