Just wondering if anyone is in the IET?
Is it worth the £130 PA price tag?

Its something that my employer used to offer all electrical staff but they stopped ding it the year I qualified!
its something I have often considered joining off my own back but I dont know anyone who is in it anymore.

I am. Get a 35% (off the top of my head) discount on publications as a result, so I would say that that is a good thing. It is also endorsed on your JIB card.

Meh.. i became a member a few years back. It's a trade off of the following:

+ For
-Discounts on publications, books etc.
-Monthly magazines which include interesting topical information about various E&T fields.
-That "in the loop" feeling which makes you feel all warm inside.

But mainly it's all about cashing in those qualifications for some designatory letters after your name which look oh so professional on your CV, email trail & correspondence.

+Against
-Yearly membership cost circa £140-£150
-The distinct impression that the majority of that membership fee is being expended on food spreads/expenses for "trustees" at SW~ seminars and events.

I'm a member, have been for more than 35 years.

If you value the magazines and the invitations to lectures and presentations then you might feel it's of value. I happen to live in London, and find the Savoy Place HQ makes a very fine 'Gentleman's Club' (though it's closed for refurb at the moment).

As for £130 p.a. HMRC allow it as a business expense, so knock 40% off that straight away.

My last subscription fee's amounted to just over £200!! Unfortunately i can't claim HMRC Business expenses etc either!!

If i had my time over again, i would definitely go down the CIBSE route. From my experiences, its far more member accessible, and an all round better organised professional body!! BS7671 would be in far better hands with CIBSE too!!

"Hello All",

I am a Subscriber [Free] to the IET`s Magazine `Wiring Matters` - I think that it is either Quarterly or Bi-Monthly [?] - Sorry but I have never taken any notice of how often I receive it - either 4 or 6 times a Year.

I have been receiving it for a few Years now - I think well before the change from the IEE - `Institute of Electrical Engineers` to the IET.

I was invited to Subscribe for Free when I had contacted the IEE [now IET] Technical Helpline about a query that I had about Part P Bathroom zoning - when Part P was about to be introduced in 2005 [?] - the Technical Support representative asked Me if I was an Electrician and when I said that I was a Heating, Plumbing and Gas Contractor - but that I was interested in the Electrical Regulations / Part P of the Building Regulations - He invited Me to become a Subscriber to the Magazine.

I am sure that You must be able to Subscribe to it by Registering on the IET website.

Sometimes it has Technical Articles that are slightly interesting and understandable to Me - But obviously an Electrician would understand ALL of the Technical details and Information contained in the Articles etc.

I think that the Magazine would be interesting for most Electricians - which is obviously the objective for publishing it.

Perhaps some of You might want to sign up to Subscribe to `Wiring Matters` from the IET before deciding whether to actually `Join` them - ?

I am sure that the IRT / Wiring Matters website would also be a useful for obtaining some Technical Information from the `Library` of available Technical Articles - here is a Link to it:

Regards,

Chris
