Alphatek were a UK test instrument manufacturers that was absorbed into the Metrel Group in the late 1990s and became Metrel UK. All Alphatek products at that time were rebranded Alphatek-Metrel until they were phased out and replaced by new Metrel models. This remained the case until recently when Metrel decided to launch a budget range of test products under the Alphatek banner. This was probably in response to Fluke Group who had earlier bought a number of well known companies (Amprobe, Robin, Meterman, Beha, LEM, HEME ect.) and started marketing their budget products under Amprobe banner. The eBay reference to the Fluke T140 is a misleading as the TEK950 is not associated to Fluke in any way, it's just similar to the T140 (eBay market leader) in specification.
Whilst the Alphatek TEK950 may well be a good two pole voltage and continuity tester, I've not tested one so can comment. The Metrel MD1150 I have tested and is an excellent two pole voltage and continuity tester, probably superior to the TEK950 but slightly more expensive.
Two pole voltage detectors that indicate voltage in broad bands do not require calibrating, however, if you were to upgrade to a two pole voltage detector incorporating a discrete voltmeter it will require regular calibration, like any other meter, in order to ensure it's accuracy.
