I've registered to NICEIC and one of the major jobs is a house rewire. I got the local council in to inspect and he said that the Bathroom SELV Lighting needed covering to stop condensation, he suggested using some plaster board made into a box... this can't be true... surely it would then get hot and become a potential fire hazard!?

Some help would be appreciated.

what a load of bull, ask him where he has got that from,i never heard of that one,i have heard of poeple being pulled up for not fitting fire hoods/fire rated downlights but this is a new one on me,was he even a spark or just a penpusher:rolleyes:

Thanks Guys! He is from the Council's Building Control Dept. :( When he said it, it didn't click, just made a note of it with a few other things he pickup on which made sense. Well I'm nearly fininshed, just need to connect up the Smokes and Insp & Test. Then I can call him again and see what he says. Just hope he's not going to cause me any probelms as I want to get NICEIC to come out and inspect so I can get registered as a Domestic Installer. :D

is a new one on me too...as's been said, ask him to show you where he got that little gem from

maybe he's worried about the IP rating...who knows

I started when I was 16 years old on the 15th Edition and after about 8 years I decided to get into Computers... Some 12 years later I've come back to being an Electrician. In Feb'08 I got my 16th and a week later got my 17th edition and it mentions nothing about sealing it up. I'm going to look forward to tripping this guy up and showing me the IEE or Building Reg that requires it!

I just thought it was something I'd missed or didn't pickup on. However, am I right in saying that the IP65 light should be at least 50mm from the joist?

if you want just to make double sure before you make him look a total tw,t,i am a niceic domestic installer i can ring the helpline and ask them what they think about it ,(should be fun)will post you my findings.

AFAIK there aren't any specific regs regarding this but is always a good idea to keep them away from joists. Try the instructions for minimum distances :)
he might be getting mixed up with the clearance distance of insulatiun material?:)

If they are flush mounting down lighters he may be getting confused with a requirement for fireproof covers. It may be a specific local requirement, under local building regs, however it is a new one on me too.

Many thanks to all who have replied! :)

I'm new to the forum and its nice to know that on my first post, I've had such a great responce!

I'll be calling the council on Tuesday next week and make an appointment... I'll let you all know how it does. (it'll be fun)

Thanks again.

Ok I'll play, I ain't from hull and I don't know the guy. I've been making hoods out of plaster board for years well before 'the powers that be say you have to.
It was perfectly obvious when the selv and mains recess halogen fittings came in it was a fire hazard, the lamps burn your friggin fingers, so they certainly will ignite dust in the ceiling space, more so if in a loft space because of draughts.

The hood has vents cut well above combustable 'dust', hot air rises! I make them 18" deep in lofts. If in a ceiling with a floor above you cannot, but still make them 4" or so deep, 10mm vent holes cut near the top (in the side) on all 4 sides.

In fact the new manufactured ones look very similar to the ones I have been making for years, but mine cost about 50p each!

why don't you post a pic?

Shouds it not be the case that if these guys are highlighting departures they should quote the specific regulation(s)
