Indeed, my local Newey's have a special on gas main earth spikes at the moment too. If they've sold out now there's always the drill and self tap option, you can stick a bolt in it as long as it's painted yellow.
 
If it's plastic I wouldn't bother, if it's in a commercial/industrial premises and the gas isn't connected yet why not get a stud welded to the gas pipe then fit a lug to cable.


exactly what i was about to say, if it's bigger than 3" it'll be welded rather than screwed so if the welder fella is still on site ask him nicely to put a stud on it for you.:D
 
Same as a small gas pipe except I would use a couple of clips joined togther and both screwed up tight.
(Don't forget to burnish the pipe before connection)

Re- Nosparks post... I'm certain I read somewhere that joining 2 standard earth clamps to go round a large diameter pipe is not considered a satisfactory means of termination,cant remember where,may have been in an NIC publication.
