Having been reading a thread recently about private lamp post installations, I've been look at my place of work's lamp posts.

We are considering making some alterations to the existing installation, so I went looking for some manufacturers product details. I took off a post cover, and discovered the detail plate, but also noted the swa cables in & out, haven't been terminated with the proper swa glands, but jubilee clips, no shrouds either.

Just to make sure it wasn't a one off, I randomly inspected other posts and found the same. The posts cut outs are these.

I'm not sure how you would terminate swa cables into such a cut out, but I don't think a jubilee clip is a British or Harmonised Standard for use with swa cable. I've only just web searched the cut out, and will make contact with the manufacturer, but what do you guys think?

Needs to be terminated using glands and terminated into the appropriate enclosure

Manufacturers instructions, the brass gland and jubilee clip are provided specifically for SWA terminations. I came across the same thing in the last place I worked and that was the answer in the end.

Sure it's not SWA and actually split / con?

Because it's only designed to be used within the confines of a lighting column, it doesn't need to provide environmental sealing or full mechanical support like a CW gland. The worm drive clips are only to make a termination to the armour which they do better in a tight space with limited access than making a half-cocked job with a gland and pipe grips.

Ok, seems I better go tell my boss the good news. Never thought jubilee clips are deemed a suitable means of termination.

However, I’d of thought a shroud would of been added?

Obviously jubilee clips are inappropriate for terminating SWA in most situations, as the cable will be compressed as you tighten up the jubilee clip. However in this case, the armour is placed between the solid gland body and the jubilee clip, and so tightening up the jubilee clip does not compress the cable.
