They are all connected to the same live "hot" wire, but only the outlet connected to the red wire will work.

Here is a image and a drawing of the wiring. [Yellow = Hot], tested using multimeter.

By the pictures that you posted I would think that the problem is in the awful mess in your wall. You definitely have a splice that is not making a good connection. Even check the splicing where the devices are. Good luck
