The rcbo tripped the first time with a bang, so double checked that I connected it correctly. Every time it has been switched on afterwards it has stayed on for a few hours with nothing plugged in and then will trip. All terminations are correct and the circuit tested okay, so I am thinking that it must be a faulty appliance or perhaps the rcbo? Thanks for all the replies.

hit the circuit at 1000V with the IR tester....do disconnect the RCBO (and any other sensitive equipment) beforehand though wont you....
if testing shows 'nothing', disconnect onward circuit from 1st point and so on
