hi not been on forum for a while as I'm still new to the electrical trade and trying to gain some experience doing little jobs for friends and family, Just wondered if anyone has ever encountered fused switches used as light switches .Just been to look at a job to replace socket and switch front in an extension , The light switch for interior lights is fused and also the light switch for the outside light, the extension has been up some years , I can see no reason why they should be fused other than maybe the supply for the lights is from the socket ring , is this common practice ?

Its not unheard of, quite often its like this in conservatories, you could use a FCU to feed a normal light switch too if you dont want to use the fused switch.

ifd i read your post correctly, what has happened here is that a likgtht supply has been taken from a socket circuit, fused down to allow for smaller csa cable, probably as it was easier than getting a lighting circuit extended. perfectly acceptable as long as regs. are complied with.

Just done an ensuite bathroom, possibly the easiest job I have ever done. 2 hours total to first and second fix, with the lighting fed from the socket circuit via an unswitched FCU under the new towel rail (to allow for an electric one in future if required), 4 down lights and an extractor fan, builder cored the hole so it was an absolute doodle.

These are what I'm going to fit in my kids rooms if they keep leaving the lights on! You leave the light on - You loose the fuse for a week!

But on a serious note - As already said,This is pretty standard practice.

My under-cupboard kitchen lights are switched like this. It was just easiest to take a switched FCU from the socket ring. Daz
