I have been asked to rewire this foreign bought lamp, or at least assess it for the safe possibility of doing so.

Now it was supplied with a two pin plug and flex and the lampholder is plastic. The metal body is obviously unearthed.

I was going to re flex it in 3 core and earth the body, but on closer inspection the contacts look dangerous to me.

I can fit my pinky finger down in there and touch the live terminal.

My opinion is leave the thing unflexed and let them use it as an ornament only as to me it's as bad a reversed polarity on a metal edison screw lampholder. (which by the way the father of the owner has recently had a belt off I have just found out so I will be looking to go over and fix that too!)

I take it a glass head or similar fits over the lamp holder. Would it be possible to replace the lamp holder for a standard B C one? And re flexing with a earth to the case shouldn't be a problem.

But at the end of the day, it's a lamp and is it worth it?

There's a lot of these ES 'Class II' style lamps around. Its so easy to put a BS1363 plug on them and thus a 50% probability of a reversed polarity. If it is going to be used then the first thing is to make sure the conductors are insulated with the standard European colours and if you can provide an earth then probably better.

Wife's uncle and it's something a bit different I suppose. Can you get lampholders separately or do I need to find a sacrificial light?

sorry, just googled it, loads to choose from. Will post pics when it's done.

Just looked at my own table lamp with a bayonet fitting and I was thinking about the two pins that are easily finger accessible.

Pardon my ignorance here, but I am half watching Close Encounters on the telly, and half thinking about this problem.

My question is - are the terminals on a bayonet fitting permanently live, or are they made live when the lamp is pressed/ pushed down and twisted as I suspect?

I could answer this myself by running two hundred yards down the road and getting my tester, but then, no-one else would benefit from the answers, which is part of what this forum is about.

Voltz doesnt usually come across as stupid but this topic really is retarded.
every bloody table lamp in existance has exposed lampholder pins.
the usual guidance is not to stick your finger in there unless you want to be a candidate for the darwin evolution award.

Thanks biff and glenn, I'm not an expert at anything, and I don't mind admitting it on an open forum.

I've NO experience at this sort of thing and was hoping for a bit of constructive support on here.

So what can we learn from this then, my EXPERT friends? That bayonet lampholder pins are LIVE all the time as you look at them, rather than becoming live when the lamp is pushed down and twisted?

So in fact, the lampholder I posted picture of is actually ok to re-flex and earth the metal fitting>?

I thought this forum was about learning and support?????

Long time since I did domestic but I seem to remember new style lampholders that only made contact when lamped being available in cord grip/pendants.

i only had in mind that E/s fitting lampholders had to have the line connected to the pin, not the screw, therefore, by omission, that the pin was deemed to be inaccessible. Hence my post.

how is it 'self-explanatory'? I didn't like the look of the lampholder contacts, and asked the advice of the forum members, only to receive derogatory comments to which I have responded abusively to!

Do you have anything constructive and informative to contribute Glenn? i was hoping so, but was sadly disappointed.

change that lampholder to BC...
or the safety retracting type edison screw..
