I'm working in an old house and the electrical is old cloth insulated wires. at each light box the cloth was just breaking away exposing bare wire in a metal box. we put in a junction box in the attic. getting back in the casing cutting out the old dry sections of wire. the electrical had been tampered with before and wasn't working properly to begin with. so, my problem now is every outlet wired in the original electric shows an open ground. I've re wired the junction boxes a few times and have identified the hot and neutral coming from breaker box to the junction but I can't identify the hot and neutral running from there down to the outlets. this is the way it was wired to begin with there is very little electric running through the walls.

my solution was to run new wire from the junction box down. the realtor doesn't want to spend the money to do that. so, the only other solution I can think of is to hook up one lead at a time then test them at the outlet. if anyone has another solution or can verify that I'm thinking correctly. maybe I'm missing something. is there another way to identify the old wire. all color has faded there's no visible distinction between the 2 that I can see.

Sounds like you need an electrician
please employ one before the house burns down.
