Identifying the cables (circuits) on the CU.

Hi, what would you guys use to identify the cable to pair them with the circuits on the CU? Could sticky colour tapes be used? Thanks.

In a domestic CU I would not really be identifying conductors but if you really want to then Reg 514.5 and the use of letters or numbers, but not bits of sticky tape.

If you're just talking domestic it's normally fairly easy to work out. You'll typically have two or three sets of pairs for RFCs. The others cooker/shower (fairly obv due to size). Lighting/smokes again easy to work out. Immersion left over.

If you use coloured tape then don't leave them in the CU (just my opinion, others may disagree).

If you are doing a rewire then it's common practice to identify cables by knicking the outer sheath of cable with a number of notches where there may be some ambiguity involved. These are easily removed when finally terminating the cables.

On Industrial CU's we use Hellermann Tyson Cable markers. Tape or the ones you write on will last about 2 months before they fall off or the ident becomes illegible.

I've starting using the clip on markers from HallermannTyton WIC2-. - WIC - HellermannTyton United Kingdom - Products - Bit fiddly with the smaller ones on 1.0 and 1.5mm2 cable, but better than tape.

If you have loads of dosh then 3M and Gelwiremarkers Lts do something called the Trasp system, with slip on and clip on carries for your labels - Trasp
