Discuss Labour Manifesto in the Electricians Chat - Off Topic Chat area at ElectriciansForums.net

I think you're deliberately missing the point MW.
Let's try this way. If the private sector had managed to get fibre to 95% of properties in the UK, then there’d be no need for any government involvement. If it was fair and reasonable priced.
It's not because it's necessary, it's because it's plainly not working.
Hope this helps.

I pay £30 a month for broadband & landline for the household, me & the Missus pay £30 between us for mobile phones. Why can’t we have the later for free as well?

Following on from Paul L's post re public ownership. We're way behind our competitors with fibre broadband. UK has 8% of properties connected, Japan has over 95%, this was achieved by the state, and S Korea has similar with state and private investment. So it's obvious that the free market in the UK is not working regarding this. Broadband is a necessity for any economy nowadays, no one complains about state funding for roads, they're state funded, if they were left to the free market we’d have a lot less roads than we have now.
Andy... you can't compare the UK with Japan... it's a very very different culture ! The reason why we are so far behind when it comes to broadband speeds is that it's all largely owned by BT ! And having worked there myself I can tell you that they are a very very slow, frustrating, bureaucratic and highly protectionist company.

Added to this... we have an incredibly outdated and corrupt planning system in this country. This means that when planning is granted for another 7,500 houses (as has happened in my area recently) there is absolutely no mention in the planning for "all houses to be wired for fibre" !

We don't even insist that all those houses should be oriented for solar panels or have provision for electric vehicle charging !!

Developers only have to mention the phrase "affordable housing" and councils are falling over themselves to say yes to anything !

I understand that DPG but to me, and it is just my opinion, its indicative of the i'm alright jack and sod the rest of you unsavoury attitude that is running through this country. What wrong with thinking of ways of helping as many people as we can,Oh sorry there's no profit in it for us guvnor so tough luck. I bet all the powers that be have got broadband.
If someone chooses to live in the middle of nowhere, why should my Tax payments enable for them to have super fast broadband. I’m all right jack, I leave in the beautiful countryside, you plebs live in the hustle bustle smog filled towns. If you’re running a business that requires such connections, then you would base it where the infrastructure is not available?

Im gonna set up a new watermill company, but like living in the desert. No matter the government can pay.

My new build has Super Nintendo fibre broadband, or whatever you call it. Just saying.

My point exactly. £35000 to have a supply installed? An absolute rip off by no doubt a company that is only interested in how much money it can make and not what is best and moral for the customer.

Not really. How far do you want to go? There's a house not that far from me that hasn't got mains power. He was quoted about 35000 to have a feed a few years ago. Should he get that for free as well? Paid for by me and you etc?
How much did you pay for yours DPG?

So did mine ;);)
There yer go, democracy in action.

PS just voted. Was gonna go for the Green Party, but don’t think they’d like my log burner or my Humvee.

Plus it’s Tory heartland, so its pretty pointless. Can’t wait to see what happens tomorrow, pretty exciting errgh?

When you say free, it would have been paid for by the original Builder / Developer.
Utilities have always been expensive.

I was quoted around £3000 for a gas supply run approx 100mtrs from the nearest main main, in 1978, way before privatisation, so nothing to do with shareholders and profit.
I'd only paid £11000 for the house.

Cost me £1200 10 years ago for a 4 mtr run under my drive!....and I had to fit the meter cupboard first

You can’t trust any political manifesto.
Promises get broken by all parties.
You can’t vote because you like the person either.... they won’t be in the job forever.
(Talking about boris and Corbyn here)

You also have to take anything in the papers with a hefty pinch of salt.
Child on floor of hospital because there’s no beds, turns into mum put him there just for the photo and send to social media... back in the bed after 1 minute.

Had to laugh at some of the daft suggestions that supporters were sharing on Facebook. Such as:
“To ensure conservative don’t win, put an X in labour AND snp”
Or
“Take your own black biro with you to mark the paper, as the (insert party name here) supporting official will rub out your pencil X”

Both of these will void your paper.

Only a few hours left.

I know we vote for an MP, but I’ve always had in the back of my mind the party leader.

This time around is a first for me; always voted Tory, but don’t think much of Boris. But then I’d rather boil my head in lard, than vote for a Jeremy or some Lib Dem bod.

No, this was true, and the hospital apologized. The fake news was the lies surrounding it and the discrediting of it by the Tory supporters.

Only a few hours left.

True, not voted yet. The polling booth is in my village club and I generally vote at a minute to 10. Never completely sure in the morning who I voted for.

broadband for all?????? 30 % of the households in this country don't have computers or even know how to turn one on. 10% in council accomodation burn the internal doors and flloorboards in winter. what's the point of giving them broadband, unless it's summat they can sell for a fix?

Most of them use the internet on their mobile phones! Still we can forget about that little pledge for the time being.

Well, the Labour Manifesto was bold and different and certainly overly socialist in nature.

Looks like, as a country, we are not ready to give up even more of our hard earned for re-distribution by the state.

Glad Lib dems are formally quiet now, they really did take the *iss out of the 2016 referendum.

Happy days, its now worth going to work today..

Andy you're far to eager to believe all the lies put out by the Tories and the leave campaign that you will not believe your own eyes, or you shape the argument in your head to deflect to Labour.
Here's the bus,

Now in your head you'll employ cognitive dissonance to convince yourself that Let's fund our NHS instead is not really meant to mean what it says. The Tories paid Google for an ad that linked to the false manifesto website, they changed their Twitter name on the night of the leaders debate to 'Fact check UK' to con people into thinking that it was an independent fact checking service. Analysis from First Draft found that in the first week of December 88% of the Tory ads on Facebook were either misleading or lying, Labour 0%.

But as I say, you will completely fail to take any of this on board or you'll dismiss it by telling yourself they're all the same as each other.
Yes that is the bus so please point out where exactly on that bus it says ". We will spend this £350 million on the NHS"
I think it is you eyes that deceive and your mind that sees the implied and not what it actually reads. The only issue with it is the pound sign not being the Euro sign.
