Listen to this one. I mostly work on commercial and industrial jobs and subby so never felt the need to get NIC. But times are hard and i've been asked to do a consumer unit change and run a shower in. I rang up the council and got the local building inspector on the phone told what i was going to do and asked how i went about getting planning permission under part 'p' his reply was ' have you got your 2391?' YES 'have you got your 17th edition' YES' 'have you undergone an apprenticeship' YES i replied. He said no worries send me your certificates and a copy of test results and get on with it!!! Great so now im not breaking any laws.

Whats your views on this??

why not we are not saying anything bad, the opposite, just don`t name him mate. how glad am i to see a council responding in a sensible way which they are all allowed to do but some are just clueless and would rather make the fee off us. top guy don`t forget to thank him :)

Pendle council, your right it is the sensible way to go around the situation. Whats the point in a building inspector coming to check so work that he has no clue about. Pointless

well done to that council shame more don`t take the example of sense. a lot of them don`t have a clue what part p is about. i was once threatened by a housing surveyor to be reported for doing jobs that required me to be in a part p scheme. i had been asked to change a couple of broken light switches in a house and replace like for like dbl plug sockets, none of which were under the scope of part p. he had a bee in his bonet over something and it certainly was not me that wound him up as i am liable to fall over as i am so laid back :) he asked if i was" part peed " his words, i told him no. to which he said it was illegal, one i should be an electrician to do any work anywhere in the house two i should have taken a part p exam i should have had insurance and i needed permission from building control. i sat back and listened to all his rambling and lost it when he said he was off back to report me and have me prosecuted. well thats when the head went, i stayed nice and calm so i did not ramble whilst telling him he could look at all my certs, public indemnity liability insurance as well as the test sheets i had in my bag for the minor works, i then proceeded to rant at him about the council not having a clue about part p and told him the errors of his ways and seeing as i was stood in the door way he was not going anywhere till i had finished. the guy whos house it was was laughing and the surveyor was starting to look a little red in the face as he got the full force of my part p rant. needless to say that was one member of the council after ten minutes a little wiser than before. i did tell him i was looking forward to the non complience notice he was going to serve me. :D

Must admit I thought most councils adopted the same policy. I have had 2 or 3 conversations with building control officers from different councils and they have all said the same thing, and my brother is an industrial spark from Eastbourne and was told the same thing last year.

my local council accept my certs direct also, unfortunately lot of work is out of my district so still need partp membership

He is only doing what they are supposed to - see page 11, part B, 1.21 -1.23 http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/uploads/br/BR_PDF_ADP_2006.pdf the only thing that is possibly incorrect is not actually asking to see your qualifications. Nice to hear it mind :)
