Mechanical Protecton Cut-out to Meter

Just read the IEE Wiring Matters mag today, article about what you are/aren't responsible for in an installation where you do Minor Works Cert stuff. It states that you need to check that the DNO head/meter/isolator setup is in good gondition and safe before starting any work on that installation, however minor. Can anyone tell me if there are any regs relating to the mechanical procteciotn of the tails between the cut-out and the meter? Do they have to be in earthed steel conduit? Can they be put in a chase up to the meter and plastered in? If they're in a cupboard can they be surface mounted? What's the deal? I realise it's a DNO issue but should be put right if wrong before starting any work on an installation. Just wondering ..... Thanks.

The tails from the cutout to the meter belong to the DNO as you said, so that is not our responsibility.

Having said that, if you find a damaged meter with the terminal covers missing, it should be reported to them so they can replace it.

Had exactly this last year on a student digs. Rang them and they came and replaced the meter with a nice new one, all for free.

Thanks for that Jason.S. Didi you have to wait for them to repair BEFORE you got on with your job? It seems that's what the 17Regs are telling us?

Nope.

Basically just stuck the broken lid back on with tape (property was unoccupied) and they came next day.

Classed as an emergency due to live exposed parts.

Yep Jason a job for friends at ESC ! your be supprised when i was on non routine the amount of cutouts that wernt secured and made pulling the main fuse out fun ! as well as back boards rotted

The supply meter and meter tails dont come under BS7671
The supply authorities have their own bible,but observations should be notified to them
