Hi guys,

I need to help please, I studied in the UK approx 7 years ago. Right after writing my C&G 2391 Level 3 I moved back home to South Africa. A short while after I received the results and passed. I have been working in South Africa since. I have been doing domestic, industrial and mining electrical work.

My family and I are moving back to the UK this Decemeber and need to find out all relevant registrations required etc to get work. Im a little confused with all this ECA, JIB, NICEIC, ECS cards etc.

Also need to confirm the limitations to my qualifications, what I can and cannot do, legally, with regards to Inspection and Testing Etc.

Please Help Guys, I dont want to be stuck when I get there as my wife cannot work as she is rather pregnant with twins

If you are going to be doing domestic, then you will need to join one of the Competent Person Schemes. They each have their own requirements.
You need to check with your chosen scheme to see if your existing quals allow you to join a scheme, or if they are time-expired.

Here's a list of the various schemes
Competent person scheme - current schemes and how schemes are authorised - https://www.gov.uk/guidance/competent-person-scheme-current-schemes-and-how-schemes-are-authorised#current-schemes

Others may help with the requirements for commercial electric

Thanks for that, so Jib, niceic, ecs card etc only applies to domestic? I’m hoping to do more industrial or water treatment works as that is my strong point but hey, I go where the money is so need to clarify things.

Do I need any registrations for industrial side?

No. The schemes in the list apply to domestic.
Note: Certsure is a group that includes NICEIC, ELECSA and maybe others.

You’ll need JIB/ECS etc for industrial, but that’s not my area of expertise. I expect others will be along with info once they get back from the pub.

I doubt that you’ll be able to pitch up and go straight to work.

If you have your 2391 then sit the 18th edition and the schemes will welcome you with open arms, just need a tester, insurance, a few books and a job to show them on the assessment.
For signing off some jobs in domestic you need to be in a scheme, for commercial and industrial it is not needed but the vast majority are members of them still, in the main NICEIC Approved contractor or Napit. think of it as a sort of badge of approval (no laughing please!!)

Before coming back to the UK why not contact some agencies to lien up some work and make contacts before everything comes together?
