Hi guys, multi-tester or individual? I'm after a megga but unsure which to buy. I have thought about calibrating. One calibration cost with multi tester or 3 with insulation, loop and rcd.

One multi mate...

No point paying for calibration of separate instruments in my opinion. I don't see the benefit.

Check out test-meter.co.uk, they give forum members a discount.

I would go multi function and if you are thinking of megger i would recommend the MFT 1500 series over the MFT 1700 series.

I was going to say the same, but I couldn't remember the model numbers. The 1553 is the "classic" Megger that I was thinking of (I think!)

Saying that, I use Metrel, MI3000... I get a lot of stick for it, but I can't fault it!

i'm in both camps. megger 1552 that's perfect on all settings except continuity, so use a fluke 1503 for continuity.

You will find most prefer MFTs, but a lot of old hands like myself prefer separates. I have a wide spectrum of testers from which to choose from, over a dozen different MFTs and nearly two dozen separates, but I always seem to gravitate back to the trusty Robin yellow bricks.
The best advice I can give you is to try before you buy, because like most tools it's largely down to person preference, what's right for you may well not suit me. Unfortunately there isn't a universal best tester, despite what you may have heard or read, they all have their quirks which may or may not suit you.

seperates are faster on big pir's.
one guy at DB doing dead tests with ins/cont tester , another guy wandering roung taking loop readings.
twice the work over the same time period - you cant do that with just 1 multi tester.

TBH over the last few years I have collected individual meters as well as my MFT.

Its a lot easier to just take in a Insulation/Cont. meter if you have a fault to find than it is the MFT.

MFT is used solely for final testing

So how's that working then?? Dead and live testing on the same circuits at the same time??

stupid question so i'll give it the dumb answer it deserves.
one person does dead tests at one db , another person does live tests at another db.
unless you think all installations have a single db ?
not very bright are you ?
either that or you have no experience of testing anything bigger than a house.

Be carefull who you call "not very bright" , I have been inspecting and testing since 1989 on most industrial and commercial installations.
Your attitude does somehow show me that you are indeed a sorry example of a tradesperson.(have another GOOD look at what your previous post describes !) , then come back to me and tell me again that i'm not very bright!

Agree with all the previous comments about the 'yellow bricks'

I've always had individual robin tester's, yes calibration costs spiral but robin are trust-worthy. You look after your Robin's and they'll definitley look after you.
