Needing guidance for career change to become Electrician.

Hi, I'm Zoë, 34, female, no university, based in Liverpool, U.K. I've worked as a medical laboratory assistant in the NHS for 14 years full time and I'm on a relatively low-average wage.

I've always seen the trades as a 'man's world' and have been nervous to go into the industry but now feel confident enough to try doing what I've (secretly) always wanted to do. My goal is to become either a commercial Electrician or a chartered Electrical Engineer.

I have no industry experience within an electrician role and the closest I get to technical experience is operating a few large automation processes at work and working with gas supplies. I have a few A-levels in the sciences but no technical qualifications.

I really would appreciate any advice as to what is realistic for myself at my age and with my lack of industry experience and qualifications. I'm willing to start at the bottom of the ladder again if I need to.

Hi Zoe Looks like your local college runs some electrical courses, probably the easiest way locally night class based couple of year s to get the basic theory done . If you did the sciences at A level im sure youll be confident with ohms law etc . Dont be Put off, Dont Dally Get Started this year. Others more experienced will be along and help further. cheers 72van

If you're quick you might be able to get into college for this year.

Don't worry about being a woman either, loads of women in the trades these days.

go for it. college courses are c&g 2356/7 levels 2 and 3. that's your starter.

This, although a lot are now changing to EAL because apparently it offers them more flexibility and is cheaper.

Have a look on Twitter and other social media for a female electrician called Karen Boom. She's based in Essex but is quite active in getting more women into the trades.

I'm sure Karen will be able to offer advice and may even have contacts in your area.
