In the additional comments box I asked for any infomation & litrature on consumer units that will meet the new 17th edition wiring regulations.
I have been told that the wylex units although in manufacture & having a parts number, do not as yet have a recommended retail price as they are so new.

I bought a consumer unit from Screwfix in May (pre 17th edition).
The new 17th editin seems identical (checked the part numbers) except that there is a second RCD in it and the wiring is slightly different to accomodate the second RCD.

Can I convert the older unit to 17th edition by adding a second RCD?

Two ways you can do it

  1. on non rcd side of cu, change all mcb's for rcbo's (sit down when pricing it up)
  2. See if Wylex do a conversion kit (not sure they do), this will enable you to install a second rcd in parallel with other rcd to mainswitch. This method you will loose 2x ways on the cu.

Thanks for your response - but what I was suggesting was to fit a second RCD and wire the MCB via it as per thr other protected RCD side of the CU, this is exactly what the new CU does. with exactly the same parts. This would be cheaper than fitting RCBO as the RCD is approx £35, you would of course loose a couple of MCB spaces.
