I'm getting started on rehabbing my house and I want to install an electric underfloor heating system that I can eventually control through an open source home automation system. As I understand it, most thermostats are not compatible with electric underfloor heating because for electric underfloor heat the thermostat needs to supply power for the heating element. But most electric underfloor heat thermostats I've seen are either dumb or don't expose their smart features through an open interface. So I'd like to ask if anyone else has seen either an open hardware thermostat that works with electric underfloor heat, or a compatible controller that exposes control over an open standard. Thanks!

So what is it that you ultimately want a 'solution' to do ? If you can define the high-level needs, then maybe there are easier/better/cheaper solutions out there.

Use an ESP8266 chip with a relay and temperature measuring device (BMP).

I did one that controls the central heating - voice control through Alexa etc.

Very cool.

Using contactors would mean you could use just about any thermostat you wanted.
