Example . Fuse Spur ? [ The Integrity of the Fixed Electrical Installation ]

Other than the Fixed Installation .][ all Electrical Equipment in an Installation . Whether Permanently Connected or Connected by Plug & Socket Outlet . should be Inspected & Tested in Accordance with the Recommendations Contained in this Code of Practice .

The fixed Installation should be Periodically Inspected & Tested to Ensure Satisfactory Condition for Continued Use as Required by BS-7671:2008

Inspection & Testing of Fixed Electrical Installation is Given in Guidance Note 3 [ Inspection & Testing ]

First Check the Socket on Wall [ Visual ] Then With a Plug in Continuity/Polarity Plug [ Test it ] Ok . A Must ◄ [ Don’t Do Hand Stands Just Yet ]
You are Checking the Fixed Installation Wiring . [ Continuity/Polarity Plug ]

15.3 : In-Service Tests . [ There’s a Reason for Me Writing all This . to Give you a Fighting Change ]
1) Earth Continuity Test .
2) Insulation Résistance Test .
Remember that the 4) Functional Test is Last :

► Q) Class 1 Kettle : What is it ? [ p/27 – 5.1 ( P ) Portable Appliance . PS you will be Asked !!!!!!!!!!!! by the Tutor .

1) Visual Inspection :
• Cord :- Run your Hand along The Cable/Flex . Ok ……… [ No Lump’s or Bump’s ……. Etc
• Open the Plug :- BS-1363 . Ok ……. ……………………[ Standard 3/13A Plug is Fitted with a Fuse in Order to ? Protect the Flexible Cord ]
• Check for any Loose Strands’ of Cable’s Ok [ 700W = 3A . so the Next One to Use is 13A – Looking at The Plate on the Kettle [ 1200W ]

p/73 – 15.4 . Earth Continuity Test / 1.5 Times the Rating of the Fuse [ 1.5 x 13A = 19.5A ] Are we Focus ?? ?? ( 26A ) ” Hard Test “
- 1.5 x 3A = 4.5A
- 1.5 x 13A = 19.5A [ You are within Tolerance ]

[ First Visual Inspection ] Ok . A Must

The Earth Continuity Test :
1) Tester Set on Continuity . Plug the Kettle Lead into the Tester / Socket . Next Clamp the Earth Bond Lead onto the Kettle Element / or the Metal part of the Body . [ Kettle had a Base Plate / Floating Kettle ] Off you Go .
Test Readings :- 0.08Ω ] Now Did we Pass !!! [ Hint : Is it ↔ Higher than 1.0Ω / No [ Pass ] ………. Read this Carefully
p/74 – 15.1 . ( 0.1 + R ) Ω where R is the Résistance of the Protective Conductor of the Supply Cord .

2) Insulation Resistance Test :
[ First Visual Inspection ] Ok . A Must ◄ Say this Kettle is Two-Years Old
Tester Set on Insulation Résistance Test . ▼ [ Power Switch put in the ON Position Kettle ]
p/75 – 15.2 :- All Other Class 1 Equipment 1.0MΩ . [ Household ]
500V d.c. - Test Results ≥ 19.99MΩ [ Now Did we Pass !!! [ Hint : Is it ↔ Higher than 1.0MΩ / Yes [ Pass ] ………. Read this Carefully
PS . if Lower that 1.0MΩ . [ Fail ]

PS. This will Come Up -&-s ; a Must !!!!!!!!!!!!
Combined Inspection & Testing .
Q) An Earth Continuity Test on ( 22m ) Extension Lead having a Core Area of ( 2.5mm2 ) Would Produce a Result of Approximately ?
a) 0.017Ω .
b) 0.176Ω . Take you best Shot .
c) 0.821Ω
d) 8.00Ω

First look at ( mm2 ) 2.5 . move along to ( mΩ/m 8mΩ ). [ 8mΩ/m x 22m = 176 ÷ 1000 = 0.176 ]

An Insulation Résistance Test on a Class 1 Appliance gives a Test Result of 0.02MΩ . V/R = I .
If the Appliance is Connected to a 230V Supply the Value of the Current that would Leak to Earth would be ? 230V ÷ 0.02MΩ = 11500 . [ 11.5mA

An Extension Lead has a Cross-Sectional Area ( CSA ) of 1.5mm2 & a Length of 14m . A Earth Continuity Reading should give a Result of Approximately ?
a) 13.3mΩ
b) 19mΩ
c) 0.1862Ω
d) 186.2Ω

First look at ( mm2 ) 1.5mm2 . move along to ( mΩ/m 13.3mΩ ). [ 13.3mΩ/m x 14m = 186.2 ÷ 1000 = 0.1862 ]

Inspection & Testing of Electrical Equipment .

What is Electricity ?
Electricity is a Form of Energy
Energy is a Force that can be Converted to One Form or another but Cannot be Created or Destroyed . The Following Definitions are Necessary to Understand Electricity & Electric Theory .

Electric Current :
This is the Flow of Electrons , or more Precisely the Flow of Negative Charge . The Rate of this flow of Charge is Measured in Amperes ( Amps )

Voltage :
Electromotive Force is the Imbalance of Electrons on Two-Parts of the Circuit . Which Causes the Flow . it is Sometimes ( Referred ) to as the Potential Difference . The Unit of Measurement of ( EMF ) is the Volt .

Power :
This is the Rate at which Energy is Transferred . [ Power = Voltage x Current ]

Résistance :
The Opposition of the Circuit to the Flow of Current .

Ohms Law :
This is a Statement for the Basic Relationship between [ Current . Voltage . & Résistance ]

Ohms Law :-
A Simple Relationship exists between the Current flowing through a Résistance & the Voltage across it .
This Relationship is Called Ohms Law . and can be Expressed as :-

[ I = V/R ]
I = Current Measured in Amps :
V = Voltage Measured in Volts :
R = Résistance Measured in Ohms :

Example :- I =V/R . i.e. I = 12V ÷ 6Ω = 2A

Ohm’s Law
In the Atomic Theory Section we saw that an Applied Voltage Causes Current flow in a Conductor when a Load is Connected . There is a Third Component that Affects Voltage & Current and this is Called Résistance

The Relationship between Voltage . Résistance & Current can be Likened to a Water Tank . [ Water Pipe & Tap ]

With the Tap Closed the Body of Water in the Tank Exerts a Downward Force or Pressure . This can be Likened to Electrical Voltage .

The Water Pipe Offers Résistance as there is Only so Much Water that can Enter the Pipe at any One Time due to its Relatively small Size . This is Similar to Electrical Résistance .

Finally . When the Tap is Turned on the Water will Flow because it is “ Pushed “ by the Water Pressure through the Résistance of the Pipe . This flow of Water Linked may to Likened to Electrical Current .

Ohm’s Law : States that the Voltage in a d.c. [ Direct Current ] Circuit is Equal to the Product of the Current & the Résistance . [ V = I x R ]
Where . V = Voltage ( Volts { V })
I – Current { Amperes { A })
& R = Résistance { Ohms { Ω })

V. Volts / R. Ohms / I . Amperes .

If the Current flowing in the Circuit is [ 100A ] & the Résistance is [ 0.1Ω ] find the Voltage .
Voltage = Current x Résistance .
V = I x R ……. [ 100 x 0.1 = 10 Volts ]

By Manipulating or “ Transposing “ the Base Formula we can also find Current or Résistance Respectively . Visualise Ohms Law in a Triangle .

As we already know [ V = I x R ] If we Cover up the ( V ) in the Triangle .
What are you Left with ? …. I/R ( I x R ) Therefore V = I x R .
The same Applies if we Want to Find the Current . Current is Designated by the Letter [ I ] so Cover up the [ I ] in the Triangle . Yeah !!
 
[ This is Only Used as an Guide Line Only ] “ Cooker “

(1) Testing Equipment Permanently Wired to Supply :
This should only be carried out by a Person Competent to work on the Fixed Electrical Installation

The Supply to the Equipment Circuit must be . Isolated . Secured “ Off “ and Proved “ Dead “ Additional Measures may be Necessary to Prevent Unintentional Re-energisation Prior to & During Inspection & Testing .

The Means of Connecting the Equipment to Wiring of the Fixed Installation may then be Exposed by Removing the Cover of the Fused Connection Unit or Similar Outlet . Providing an Isolating Point for Disconnecting the Equipment to be Inspected & Tested Using a Portable Appliance Tester or Other Suitable Instrument .

The Leads must be Insulated for the Test Voltages’ to be Applied and be Suitable Positioned whilst Performing the Test : [ Leads Fused ] ◄ i.e.
Including Control of the Working Area to Prevent them being “ Touched “ During Testing .

Class 1 Equipment :- Continuity Testing
Connect the Earth Bond Lead from the PAT Instrument to the Conductive Casing on the Equipment to be Tested . Another Suitable Flexible Lead can be Connected between the Earth Contact of the Integral ( 13A Socket on the PAT Instrument Via the ( Earth ) Pin of a Suitable Plug and the Temporary Exposed Earth ( E ) Terminal of the Fixed Wiring in the Outlet .

“ Cooker “ [ Mains Voltage .230V ] Danger Live Power : Must be Isolated ●

Outlet Supplying Fixed Equipment ]
Mains Supply Isolated Prior to Performing Test ] [ Do Not Cut Power unless you are Trained to Do So ] Competent Person
▼ Connecting Mains Cable 230V
Earth Bond Leads Connected from Test Apparatus to Fixed Outlet on Building Structure & Equipment .
i) Lead onto the Isolators’ Earth in side of the Isolator .
ii) Lead onto the Casing off the Appliance . Body .

“ On Completion of Continuity Testing . The Earth Bond Leads must be Removed “

(2) Testing Equipment Permanently Wired to Supply :
The PAT Instrument Test Leads should be Connected to Apply the Test Voltage between the Line ( L ) and Neutral ( N ) Terminals Strapped Together on the “ Load Side “ of the Local Isolation Point . and the Earth Terminal at that Point . The Insulation Résistance should be Recorded .
The “ Leakage Method “ of Determining Quality of Insulation could be Used as an Alternative .

Outlet Supplying Fixed Equipment ]
Mains Supply Isolated Prior to Performing Test ] [ Do Not Cut Power unless you are Trained to Do So ] Competent Person
▼ Connecting Mains Cable 230V

Leads from Test Apparatus Connected between Line ( L ) and Neutral ( N ) Terminals Bridged Together and Earth ( E ) Terminal within Outlet .
Class 1 Equipment to be Tested with [ Integral Switch(es) “ ON

“ On Completion of Testing . The Connections within The Outlet must be Correctly Re-fixed and the Cover Replaced before Re-Connecting the Supply “

Fixed Installation’s :
It will Serve No Useful Purpose is Safe and Sound Electrical Appliances or Other Apparatus are Plugged in or Otherwise Connected to a Fixed Installation which does not have Effective Earthing .

The Safety of the Fixed Installation should Comply with BS-7671:2008 Requirements for Electrical Installations { IEE Wiring Regulation’s ]
Its Condition should be Periodically Verified by a Suitably Qualified Electrically Competent Person

The Fundamental Requirement for Protection against Electrical Shock if Exposed-Conductive-Parts of Class1 Equipment becomes Live due to Fault Conditions . is to Interrupt The Supply as Rapidly as Possible to Prevent Danger .

This Requires a Good Low Résistance Earth Path back to the Source of Supply to Produce Sufficient Current & Ensue the RCD will Operate Rapidly
RCDs 17th Edition .
You will still get Old Installation 16th Edition [ Circuit / Breakers ]
