I've been fixing some mircowaves, I've opened them up and all is gone is the fuses. I noticed that in 2 of the same microwaves, one had "sand filled" fuses and one had glass ones. does any one know what the difference is between the 2 types of fuses, and does it matter if either type is used?

regards luke

Hi lukescotty, as far asi can remember the purpose of the sand filled fuses was to extend the life of the fuse. as current flows throught the element, the element gets hot and starts to sag. over a period of time this affect can lead to the fuse rupturing even when there is no fault current flowing. Can become a bit of a nuisence especially if the applience is used a lot.

On a microwave that is being used a lot (commercial) i would fit a slow blow fuse (as the sand filled ones are sometimes called).

hope this helps

Hi Shakey, I beleive that HRC fuses are slightly different than sand filled fuses. When a HRC fuse blows the silicon sand surrounding the element will turn to glass, thus ensuring that the element will never "repair" itself. Its all to do with the energy required to "blow" the element. I much prefare a circuit breaker - cant wait ti invent one that fits in a plug top!
