Recently booked an EICR for a 2 bed rental property (first time letting this property).
Quoted price for the test.
How long should an electrician allow for the test? Should they automatically do any remedial works needed? Should they phone me and quote for any works needed?
Many thanks in advance for assistance

I would allow for a day, and no I wouldn't include remedial works. These would be quoted for separately afterwards.

Generally you would expect them to quote or estimate. However a pragmatic electrician may do some small works as they go. Something like a broken light switch for instance could lead to an unsatisfactory EICR, but it's just easier for everyone if they replace it and add an appropriate charge.

Thank you. I was quoted £175+VAT, electricians (2) didn't arrive until after 3pm, text me at 5:30 that were all done. Bill was for just short of £400 (of which £10 was for 3 glands and 2 MCB type B's)
I don't normally like to dispute things but I feel they are taking me for a ride!

Bill was for just short of £400 (of which £10 was for 3 glands and 2 MCB type B's) Remedials were: Downgrade shower to 13A, downgrade garage to 26A, no live continuity on ring main, TRS glands and grommets in garage. Surely those remedials wouldn't cost £200, and if there weren't materials costs then their hourly rate is extortionate!

£400 incl VAT, still leaves £148 how was that justified?
That's how I feel! Am tempted to pay the £175 & materials + VAT and ask for breakdown of time for other works but also don't want anything more to do with them / any more stress, just seems so wrong.

Theyve put 5 man hours into the inspection which could be okay, but id pay what you were quoted, 175+vat. Wait for response and copy of the report. You could upload a copy here with your address blanked off, You dont have to use the same electrician to rectify a report so without prior comms with you shouldn't have gone ahead.

A copy of the report with all details redacted. Your, and the electricians info deleted.

2.5 hours seems a bit quick, but that can be down to the size of the property and simplicity.

The 26A for garage also doesn’t sound right.

Can you also post a photo of the fuseboard, showing the switches under the hinged lid.

A lot of an EICR is common sense. No bare wires hanging, broken switches etc… so if you had broken fittings before, and they weren’t mentioned… I’d think they haven’t done a thorough check.

You asked for a report and agreed a price for it. Unless you've signed a contract which includes additional work, without prior permission (if you signed a contract, check it), then I'd be inclined to pay what was agreed.

'Remedial' work raises some questions, on the basis of your first post, so it might be an idea to post scanned report and invoice, with any personal and business details redacted.

no live continuity on ring main,
That could take 5 man hours alone to find and rectify but if all was completed in timescale shown it couldn't have been too difficult to locate.
As others have said downgrading an instantaneous shower to 13A and garage to 26A (Never known of a 26A MCB/Fuse?) don't sound right.
I too would be inclined to pay the £175 + vat as agreed pending a breakdown of the unauthorised works.
I suspect you wont get a copy of the report as that may be held as ransom!
