And here was me thinking they were for making apprentices on.

Tony - I think we're thinking along the same lines here.

I've come across this problem a few times over the years. Its even happened at home to me a number of times. Does the stat your using have a thermal cut-out ?. Some stats come with a small cut-out on the top and unless they are switched off, this trips due to the high heat output of the stove. During the winter months when my own stove would be burning, I'd swithch off the Immersion heater altogether.

That was the first thing that I checked, to see if the reset button on the stat had poped up. I might also suggest to her, to get a heating engineer to look at the set-up, as Im pretty sure there isn't a water pump fitted to the Rayburn? :coffee:

She would only need a pump if the hot water cylinder was lower then the rayburn, as the heat rises to the cylinder in most situations. If she had a few rads on the heating coil, that would lower the heat to the cylinder too.
This is starting to sound like a lesser trade (plumbers) forum.

right....what needs to be done here....is whats called a heat leak radiator is to be installed....usually in the bathroom...as coal burners dont have a sensor on em to tell it when to shut off.......i will assume this rayburn in question has been plumbed either as s or y plan...with a salamander box....my rayburn is.....so, if this isn`t the case then it will/should have an injector tee fitted on the supply pipework (from the rayburn out to the cylinder)....but it needs a heat leak rad on the flow/return BEFORE it reaches the s or y plan valves...very important this....as it could not only continue to burn out stats....but in time will destroy the backboiler on the rayburn itself......and an expensive business that is to replace as well as the whole firebox has to be dismantled to remove it...together with all the firebricks....time consuming....so let em know about this....catch it early before any real damage is done......if it has been installed incorrectly....tell em go get the numpty out who did it to correct his stupid mistake....

See - I told you I know nothing about AGA's. :)

Just got back from one of my customers, after replacing a thermostat in her immersion tank. Now the problem is, that this is a regular occurrence that happens every six months or so. As the thermostats should last a lot longer than this, I’m wondering if something else is at play?

She also has a coal fired Rayburn oven that also heats the water, and stores it in the immersion tank. She mentioned (could of told me earlier), that on a few occasions she has had to come down during the night to open the hot water taps to drain out the boiling water, as there is nothing on the Rayburn to regulate the water temperature.

Now, could this be causing damage to the thermostat? I couldn’t get through to her that the thermostat only controls the heating element in the immersion tank, and not the temperature of the water from the Rayburn.:skep:
This is happening to us as well, we have an oil fired Rayburn Royal which heats the water through the winter , we had the tank replaced two years ago as it was 50 years old installed at the same time as the Rayburn had a crack in it the new tank is insulated with blue foam, when we try to use emersion when weather is hot and it's fine if then we use Rayburn for a while it blows the emersion element we are at a loss
