I'm currently doing a 3 bed new build. Normally I would stick a smoke in the hall and landing and a heat in the kitchen. However the hall and kitchen are open plan so what should I do? A smoke more in the hall area or a heat more in the kitchen area? Answers on a post card. First answer wins a 20a proteus mcb as I have an abundance of them for some reason.

Lol - keep the Proteus MCB mate, totally sworn off anything CEF!

Smoke in hall area, and heat in kitchen will see you fine.

So long as your smoke is (broadly) 3m away from sources of heat, it shouldn't false alarm.

Ensure heat is over sources of likely ignition - i.e, central towards cooker.

Make sure the smoke stays more in the "hall" area than the "kitchen area.

Good practice to interlink the lot :)

Sorry should have mentioned interlinked goes without saying. Always do it. Cheers for that. I don't find cities stuff too bad. I used to use WF so anything is better than that tat!

Glad to hear that interlinking is by default! Good stuff.

The Cities thing is more personal than a quality thing. Just not happy to give them any further business.

BS 5839 requires detection in communal areas, and as there is always a definite cut off from where the kitchen ends and the lounge starts, I tend to install and additional smoke in the lounge.

Not always the case in open plan apartments and bedsits.......

However, it should be kept in mind that a smoke detector will cover a 7.5m radius max - so furthest practical distance away from kitchen area, with a heat in the kitchen area....

New regulations in Scotland for new build say you need a smoke on the upstairs landing a smoke in the downstairs landing lounge and a heat in the kitchen all interconnected
The upstairs and dowstairs can be ION Lounge Optical

Good practice to fit opticals anywhere there's a chance of draughts as ION is more susceptible to wind, etc.

Opticals also hold the margin on detection of smouldering fires, but not by much any more.

Also, Ions will be phased out totally over the next few years - due to radioactive content.
