Title: New trainee from Manchester – looking for advice
Hi everyone, my name’s Abubakar and I’m from Manchester.
I’m 41 and currently retraining as a Domestic Electrical Installer. I’ve signed up for a weekend Full Scope Electrical Installer course (including PV + EV) and I’m also working with a local electrician unpaid to gain hands-on experience.
I don’t come from an electrical background (I used to run a phone repair shop), so this is a big career change for me. I’m keen to learn, and I’d really appreciate advice from those of you who have been through this path before – especially around:
  • Essential starter tools and test equipment (GS38 compliant)
  • Tips for passing the ECS test
  • How to get started as an Electrical Mate or trainee on site
Looking forward to being part of this forum and learning from you all. Thanks in advance!

Abubakar

Welcome

What qualifications will you be getting after doing this course and how long does the course last?

Are you aiming to be self employed or work for a company?

I am surprised to see PV and EV at this stage of your learning if I am honest.

Have you been made aware of the route to be fully qualified? Some of these courses if you read the fine print allow you to do no more work than any person can currently do without qualifications. A few years back you could do these courses and with 2 years experience be accepted onto a Competent Person Scheme, that is no longer the case.

To be a fully qualified Electrician you will need to do the NVQ part of the training and complete the AM2 test. Without that you just have the technical qualifications of an Electrician.

With regards to the ECS test what exactly are you referring to? Is it the Health, Safety & Environmental Assessment test?
