not an electrician, not working ,retired, exasperated .annoyed .old and cranky. not fond of these question either.
I have a Hafco al 340 lathe the old 2kw motor carked. I bought a 3hp motor to replace it It works fine forward but will not switch to reverse. Is there anyone here who has a similar experience and how did you rectify it? Any help here is greatly appreciated.
Connections are:-
240v with 110v control
U1 to U1
U2 to U2
Z1 to V1
Z2 to Z2
When I swap U1 and U2 on the motor I get reverse but through the same contactor

If all you have done is replace the motor then the most obvious thing is that the reverse switch is also faulty (maybe damaged when the motor went).

The reverse switch just does what you did manually and swap over 2 of the wires.

I would check that to see if it is actually working.

have done so, reverse contactor is working . old motor had a fault in start winding. The people who sold me the new motor are no help here. Nor is any electrician in the local area able or willing to help. seems to be a" knowledge is power kind of thing" I have the circuit diagrams. for lathe but no idea how the new motor is wired. only an uneducated guess. What Id like to know is , rather than switching U1 and U2 can the same be achieved by switching Z2 and z1.
