Hi guys Kris here , where i stay in north of scotland its a town well village really, and what ive noticed is there are a few one man bands who have basically been sparkys all there days and have got to the stage that they do alot of work except work that requires signing off, they feel theyre too long in the tooth to go back to college, there are select guys aswell but i was just curious as to if this happens all over ? just wondered what the regs / stipulations are , i wouldnt think theyd be 17th ed , I mean i need my gas tickets to work on gas so does similar conditions come into effect for you guys ,,, cheers in advance for any comments chaps,,,, Kris

As far as i know all they would need is the 17th, and a school kid could pass that so-called level 3 qualification. Again, as far as i'm aware there is no Part P registration required in Scotland....

Oh, and if any of these older electricians need to actually go back to college to pass the 17th exam, they should be thinking about giving up working in the trade and retire... lol!!

Yeh Scotland seems to be very laxed in rules, regs etc, TBH it would be better if it was all the same ,

All the same Yes, but the same as in Scotland, definitely not as in England and wales etc....

How can they be lax in the rules if the rules don’t apply?
They’re a dammed site better off without part P

Of course it IS laxed , i didnt say part P is laxed in scotland i said things are more laxed in scotland,

This could get interesting when some of the Scots lads get wind of this thread.
Lol I would put myself up against any of my southern counterparts. We just work to a generally higher standard up here especially in the industrial/commercial sector. We don't need nor want Part P up here thanks. We have SELECT and Building Control to adhere to.

When you check you normally find southern blood lines in them guys history....lol. Of course there are good and bad everywhere mate Im just having a little jibe. I DO think the way we do conduit in Scotland leaves a better more mechanically sound job though. (Lock rings at every termination). Apart from that there is no real difference.

As far as i can make out, the SJIB have far stricter requirements to acquire it's trade cards than that of the JIB, and i hope they stick to those higher rules too!!

Don't think there is much in it mate to be fair. Maybe its changed now as my apprenticeship was pre 1990......by a little way ahem...lol. I know we did am1 am2 city & guilds whatever it was and some scotvec stuff or whatever that was called. We also had a log book to show our work off...long before this NVQ 3 baloney came in...or at least before it was popular. I know they have changed the requirements these days....probably dumbed down like everyone else.
As an aside when I moved to england (Back in Scotland now btw after 13 years down there) I wrote/called the JIB and said I was after a gold card as I assumed it would be transferable due to being almost the same organization......what a load of peeing in the wind that was. Send us this doc/that doc show us your 15th/16th regs certs or whatever it was at the time. I really thought it would be just a case of give them a copy of my gold card and NI number and be done with it.

how does a lockring at every termination make it more solid?

if you cant get it tight in one piece use a runner with a lockring, probably what you mean here

Cheers guys . I was just curious and certainly wasn't directed to Scottish sparks just a couple of local one man bands near me. They're actually nice guys as worked on jobs with them at one stage . I dare say you will always find some guys with no quals who call them selves tradesman in gas and elect. Do you guys think that part p would ever be put into action above the borders.?

This sounds like the green eyed monster has got you.

Are they getting the work and you’re not?

In Scotland we put a lock ring on before we put our coupler/conduit box on the end of the conduit. No real big deal we just put like 1 extra thread on the end of the tube and stick the lockring on then put the coupling on after. I personally think it leaves a much more solid job....but I can accept it is probably splitting hairs to be fair.

i think you guys need to eat more porridge if its loose without having a lockring before a box

NO NO Tony im a gas engineer mate , there work has nothing to do with mine ,, not sure why you would come to a assumption like that,,, ive worked alongside them in different jobs , where i stay everyone knows everyone , i was basically just curious if part p would come up this way and to be fair if it did that guys would be retired so makes no odds,
