I have acquired an old British Thompson Houston 1/3 HP BKS 2410 single phase motor on a pillar drill, it needs new bearings before I can test run it, my question is can I use a multi meter to check the windings and find out if its a go-er at this stage and worth restoring ?

If so how ?

better with a continuity/insulation tester.

Rufues Do you have a meter and a megger and are you an electrician

Rufus you really need a megger and a meter but the megger is the best way to really check your windings
An Insulation Tester you mean Mate a megger is a trade name, may be different over the water though.

Megawatt is just showing his age... I still call 'em Hoovers ! I'm probably older than Mw and even I know the difference between a Megger and an Insulation tester, as should you.[/QUOTE]
