evening chaps

Looked at a potential board change today in a block of flats

looked like the lighting circuit was wired in vir cables (live and neutral singles) in metal conduit

go ahead and change the board?

make sure IR are ok, good zs's and recommend its re-wired and stick a note on my eic for the c/u change?

look forward to your thoughts

Strongly advise that the wiring is long past its normal lifespan and should be replaced.

A point for point rewire is a simple enough job, just pull new brown and blues in with the old stuff.

Your ptoblems wil lie in the gaining of good IR results and the possible/probable crumbling of the insulation on the cable when disconnected and handled.

yah. a bit of heat shrink over the ends, be able to outlast you and me . lol.

TBH priorities have been compromised, replace the VIR first then fit CU, This stuff crumbles, well past sell by date. What were your IR results out of interest.?

Yeah but changing a CU is much quicker and easier to turn a quick profit.

Who in their right mind would fit a rcd board to a vir install?

I can think of one bloke in this area who almost certainly would!

It's allright, they can just come on here and get advice on how to stop the RCD tripping.

Yeah, not me just would not touch the stuff, remember working in some flats, fitting new accessories on the lighting circuit, for an old firm I worked for, the insulation was just falling off, gaffer said just sleeve it all up, anyway we had an big argument I refused, he gave in we ended up rewiring the circuits.I was happy don't know to this day if he got payed for that.

Name and shame ....

A3 home electrics

Every regular customer at the wholesalers has a story about the time they had to put his bodgery right.
Even Surrey fire and rescue have been called out to attend his work!

I wouldn't entertain changing the board knowing its VIR. I thought there was some reg stating you were not allowed to reconnect that old shrite?

Which reg would that be then?

The regs don't (apart from the metal fuseboard nonsense) make any specification about materials which can or cannot be used.
