Why fit a pull-cord switch for a shower?

I use a Stanley. Works fine for me I suppose. I retract the blade so only a couple of millimeters are showing, no chance of nipping the insulation then. Do you have a better way?

I do, ill try explain, far far easier to show

Hold the cable flat in hand

Using snips, snip upwards either side of the cpc, go even further possibly by cutting halfway into the conductors, then using 2 hands, pull the top layer snipped insulation and the remainder left underneath away from each other, it flies off

Might be hard to understand but if shown you would see, could strip about a metre of grey without damaging innercores in around 5 seconds

I use that method for the smaller cables! I never really gave it a thought for the chunky 10 and 16mm T+E's! I'll have to give that a try!

I snip it at the top and cut down the centre of the cable with a knife, with the blade angled toward the cpc strands.

It goes through it like a knife through butter, only it's more like a knife through pvc.

Smaller cables i use the common way of pulling the cpc through to split it

I used to mess about for ages with a knife on a 10mm trying not to cut inner cores, until someone shown me this way and then the " why havnt i been doing this for years"

I use a knife on all t+e, So much easier I find. And no chance of the CPC breaking off or Being damaged with my clumsiness lol

There is...........if you use the wrong kind of knife. i.e. one that's too sharp.

I have tryed infact most my working life i used a knife till i was shown that simple method, now i dont bother with a knife, theres no risk of damaging them at all

Can't visualise that at all I wanna know how you do it now!

Snip down the centre,bend the live or neutral, whichever, until you can expose enough cpc to grab with the pliers and twist the cpc (making sure you have all the strands)
Hang on to the rest of the cable with a pair of pliers and rip away,pull with a pair of cutters and the cable strips no problem whatsoever


Cut off the mangled end and bobs your uncle,I would be able to strip 100 meters of the stuff in no time whatsoever

I had a shower with no pullcord in a periodic that I later went through on the annual visit from the NIC, I'd flagged it and said it needed one, I think I found a reg that I thought covered it but the NIC inspector basically said I wouldn't have bothered if I were you.

Also was wondering if somebody had set the profile ''the oracle'' up as an alterego to see how many bites he could get?! If not he's really asking for it! :biggrin:

Could someone help I am fitting a shower cable and mk bp ceiling switch . Question is im using 16mm t&e but on the switch the earth is only big enough for 1 wire . So do both earth wires have to go in . And btw my shower is 10.5 kw with a 12 metre cable run so im ok with the cable im using

So is it ok to thin the earth cable down slightly on both earth wires so both will fit in earth terminal in switch

I automatically thought the earth wire was as thick as the other 2 core live and neutral so I was getting worried oh well . And why do some sparkys say to use 10mm t&e and others say 16 isnt it better to b over cabled than under cabled

Why would you need an earth wire though if the other 2 are nice and thick?

I thought this why not leave the cpc out and save the copper, it's not like its doing anything

So what your saying is you dont need the earth or cpc wire at all then . But u need it in the cu and the shower unit
