Hi All,

Customer has very neatly managed to put a 4" nail into a plastered wall right through the cable feeding socket below - "it went bang" , did it!!!!!!! how strange - so what would be the best way of effecting a sutible repair to the cable without trashing too much of his newley decorated wall??????????

depends, not really enough info to give an answer, dig out the cable. try refeeding without damaging the wall possibly other side of the wall not decorated maybe pop threw from other side. is there a void above in the ceiling if its a ring are both cables damaged? possible to do a junction at top and wire as spur?

Not long before someone will come up with the old 'crimp and heatshrink' solution...dont...it's a bodge...and whats more a potentially dangerous bodge.....You know the correct way to sort this, there are no quick fixes.

I agree with Murdoch, Put another socket further up or down depending on the way the cables run.. As for making a mess then im sure you can agree that if there going to put nails through cables then what do they expect..

Saying all this I recall repairing one like this before.. However after following the cable it was fed Diagnally so that opened a can of worms

This is assuming both cabes on the ring are fed the same way..

if the cables come down to the socket, the least messy fix would be to get the floor above up, find which of the 2 cables is damaged, then joint the undamaged cable under the floor so that the affected socket is then a spur.

^^^ Exactly what he said if both cables come from same direction you can effectively pull a few boards up or get in loft space etc and change it into a spur...... absolutely no damage to deco' except the hole the original nail went through...... then a lesson to customer about zoning!!!

Here it comes......
A year or so ago I would have totally agreed with you, but if the joint is good and the heat-shrink watertight, why should it be dangerous and not last the lifetime of the installation?

I'd smash a hole in the wall, joint the cable using a screw terminal junction box. Re-plaster hole and jobs a good-en'. Forget certificating the work, take cash (having overpriced the work) and on to the next job :)

plasterboard wall you say eh....so will the damaged cable pull?...if so tie a new on and use the old to pull the new in

Why are you lot bothering with tape over your twisted-together repair? Once the new plaster has dried out it will be an insulator, so by putting tape on you are just wasting money, and ripping the customer off!

This is all well and good, but............................................. isnt this standard solve the problem in ya sleep stuff. I take it the OP is a spark and if so how on gods green earth did they manage to be a spark if they need to ask this???
Perhaps its me, grumpy old pillock that I am.

If the OP hasn't had to deal with this particular issue before, nothing wrong with getting another point of view from experienced sparks. What's your preferred solution?

Whatever you use, crimp, solder, maintenance free push-in connector, I'd like to fit some adhesive lined heatshrink over each core and then another over the whole lot, including the sheath. Then when wet plaster's being applied, your joint is well protected.

Disconnect the cable and remove it (or not).
Fit an extra mcb or rcbo to create 2 radials.
Keep them to 20a or 16a.
Do the bs7671 tests inc. checking earth loop impedance against the 80% figures.

And your justification that this method is a bodge is?...

Yes what started off as a laugh has now got silly, pull the nail out, Disconnect the damaged leg and split the 2 cables at the db across 2x 20 amp RCBOs or 16s and re-test and certify, end of, Job done.

Jeez.
Just do it properly. Its not splitting the ****in atom.

And your justification that this method is a bodge is?...

1.Crimping solid cores with insulated crimps....bad news
2.Heatshrink over joint....not the same standard of insulation...bad news.
3.Wet plaster over a poorly insulated joint in a cable...bad news
4.Potential for future dampness in a wall with a poorly insulated joint...bad news

Just my opinion but nothing anyone can say in support of a crimped joint plastered into a wall will ever change it.
Tel came up with by far the best solution.

wirepuller is correct though
a crimp terminal is ok at the screw block but not for continuing a ckt as surge current could overload it and burnout
twisting the wire ends together and capping with a wire nut mechanically binds them (also taping cap in place)
any junction in the wire is susceptible to corrosion so i usually seal the connection with liquid electrical tape (rubber solution)
