Afternoon chaps and chapettes, got a tricky one for discussions, firstly let me explain I am an Electrician (retired some six years now) my neighbour has just changed his consumers unit, or had it changed by someone and asked me to check it out as it keeps tripping without any load connected, I...
Had an email from my wife, one of her friends husbands changed a light over and now it doesn't work. Dunno what people think sometimes, I can almost guarantee he mixed a neutral with sw/wire!
I wonder if people think, how hard can it be, electricians can do it?? lol
Anybody else get this?

Hi all.
Changed a board the other day and the RCD's not tripping on test.Changed the RCD and still not tripping.Did a ramp test and still no luck.Tested the RCBO's and they don't trip either. There's no MET at the incoming supply just a 10mm earth bond going down into the wall, so has to be a...
Bit embarrassed to be asking this. Its been a bad year.
Hi all. Back in January I did my City and Guilds 17th Edition Full 2382-12 IET level 3. Just to brush up, as I have been out of sparking for about 6/7 years (sparky for 12 years before that)
Was hoping to do 2391 - but had an accident...
Came across this whilst doing PAT in a women's refuge, and not a single RCD in the house. Whoever installed the worktop and sink never gave a thought to splashes from the sink. The socket front has apparently been changed once due to it smoking (I wonder why?), But they didn't think to change...
Just want to see if anyone else has changed from a sole trader to ltd whilst with the niceic.
Sure they said it was £60 when I phoned up.
But reading through this it states '...change of trading title (not involving change of ownership)'
Would that mean my ownership has now changed as there...
Hi,
I have an old home alarm that has stopped working correctly, and I don't have the manual.
It says 'Gemini Advanced Microprocessor Control' on it, and it's a basic keypad with no display.
Buttons with numbers 0-9 on it and then buttons underneath saying:
'mem' 'omit' 'reset' 'prog' 'set'...
the house im working on at moment has had a conversion to attic, i had to change the board for extra ways..
do i use eic for new circuits and eicr for existing circuits or can i put on one eic and comment on what happened , i.e changed board for extra ways
Chaps,
Just doing a cu change today.
All bar two light switches have metal knockout back boxes.
The remaining two have the original wooden back boxes and the client does NOT want them changed due to decoration (cant say i blame them).
I cant think of any regs off the top of my head that says...
Well, there I was trying to edit my sig, stop the autoprompt to my emails...
Scrolling down, it came to change skin..I wonder what that does...?, Ive now ended up with a blue vbulletin format which is lame, it also has the settings well and truly hidden.
Can some kind soul please tell me...
Hi I was wondering what certificate is required for changing just one 32A mcb to 40A mcb. It for 8.5 kw shower replacement, 15 meter of wiring is existing 10mm2 clipped to wall and there is a 45A shower isolator in meter cupboard.
Right as you probably know all the JIB titles have changed, again.
Part of me likes the masses of definitions, but my question relates to what do they mean?
One in particular.
Provisional electrician.
Can a provisional spark work on site unsupervised, or does he need to be watched like a...

Why is mains domestic power referred to as either 230v or 240v? Why not settle on just one of them? (My limited knowledge tells me that the reality is usually 243v or 237v - is that right?)
Cheers.
I want to encorporate an extra RCD into a single RCD board as you will know my problem is the neutral bars. In the present single RCD board there is only 2 neutral bars. If I was to change it I'd need to split one of the neutral bars into a 3rd for the outgoing neutrals of each RCD? Would this...
just had a call from someone who said their shower is jumping when on the high setting, they did tell me it only started happening when her hubby changed the pull cord switch as cord had snapped. would you say possibly trapped cable or could the shower be burning out,
i aint even changed a...
Hello i was hoping someone could advise me on which way to go with this:
I carried out a PIR on a car garage and afterwards explained to the customer the observations/recommenations before i wrote the report up in which i recommended a CU upgrade as the old one had rewireable fuses, nothing...

Last month I changed a consumer unit and all was well. Now neither of the RCD's are tripping correctly. I get either >50v or >40ms. Could this be 2 faulty RCD's? the make is Contactum and the elecsa guy I spoke to today didn't seem too keen on them. Idea's most welcome
