Discuss 18th Edition EXAM UPDATE REQUIRED in the UK Electrical Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net

HI ANYONE KNOW WETHER WE HAVE TO SIT AN UPDATE FOR THIS , IS IT MANDATORY ?
No need to shout Mate, I suppose to be compliant you will need to become 18th edition qualified, as it is with the 17th, I think some of the scamschools are advertising courses as we speak.

What I find annoying is reading if you have 17th A3 then 1 day course, but if you are 17th but prior to A3, then 3 day course. What is that all about, apart from a scam to charge more for something I don't need?

If you are self employed & run your own business, I think its a given. If you're an employee its what you employer degrees, or future employer sees as essential qualification or not.

I think these particular 'courses' are all a bit of a scam. Its an exercise on how to use a publications contents & index, and a time set aside for an exam. There's no instructional content, the learning you have to do yourself.

As you say Middy an excercisein how to navigate a books contents, plus how to pass an exam, no learning content whatsoever, they are a required element, as wellas being a licence to print money for the scam schools.

I wouldn't mind if they actually taught you something. When I did my 17th, I spent my own time reading researching, doing mock exams, before going on the course.

I know there's some on here who say its a walk in the park, thats not the point, still paying with hard earnt cash.

Not being funny :))), a JIB card requires you to do a H&S exam, not quite the same or in depth as BS7671, but no less important. Price £30 for a multi choice exam, and they will send you a booklet with all the questions & answers.

From my own minimal research on the matter, the 18th comes out on July 2nd, but doesn't come into effect until 18 months later. That's January 2020.
You've got plenty time to get the qualification.

Theres a whole new section 8 been added. That's hardly a "minor" change.

It is not mandatory... but certainly advantageous to have.

The 18th Edition, are due to be published in July 2018 with the regulations coming into full effect in January 2019.

Does this mean I can expect pass my ELECSA 2019 assessment without wasting days and money on a "course" and "exam"?

Ha - my review is in Sept so I'll be promising to do it for next year no doubt. But I definitely won't be taking classes for it, I'll do one of the "on line" training things where you just show up for the the exam :) .

So how many people have their 17th Qualification in A3 flavour?

What a load of turd. So I have to do a 3 day course because I didn't feel the need to take a day off work and pay hundreds of pounds a couple of years ago for a small update.

well look at it this way... there will be a 6 month period where you can work to either the 17th or 18th edition, pass it quick and you can be the first guy in town working to 18th regs and charge more for your work... sell it as future proofing... give it a couple months and you will get nice shiny stickers on everything saying 18th compliant...

You need to donthis course if you wish to come across to your customers as a serious proffesional outfit.

It is a huge annoyance but it is just one of those things.

I get a sticker?

Sign me up... sign me up!

I have 17 AMD 3 too.

Hoping the 18th is on over the summer or in Sept in the local college. But 1 day learning and a 1hr exam looks better than 3 days and a 2 hour exam lol

I'm working to 17th A3 but just booked my 18th it starts July 18th till 20th and it cost £300 for 3 days but I got told that all sparks must have 18th by Jan 2019....don't know how true that is though

I take it the person who said that, was the recipient of your (or your companies) £300?

For me, I imagine I will need the 18th before I renew my JIB card.
Normally I would try to find somewhere that would allow me to just sit the exam, but I have just been told my current employer will pay, so I may try to find somewhere that will provide a copy of the Regs.

I think I could well be telling them to stick this lot where the sun don't shine.
30 years in the NICEIC and they treat me like a bleedin' beginner.....what about special offers for long time members....some chance.....set of shysters.
Get friggin' genius Staniforth to sort out that motor control problem on a Heidelberg 4 colour printer that I did last week saving the client thousands.......what chance?..........SFA.
THIS IS B******KS!

From my experience with them, I noticed a change just after the Part P came in they used to the upholder of standards and this is what their reputation comes from today from then they got very commercialised selling merchandise which once they wouldn't endorse. Let's face it what can they do at worst remove you from the roll I had this discussion with them when my old boss refused to comply with the regs. Although in the spec they put the contractor must be a member of theNICEIC we all know this is really how good a contractor is and price. We are only members of these schemes as it is the cheapest option to comply with building regs.

Then you have to add on the days you are not earning to ......

So the cost for a SE spark is higher, and I've not got the AMD 3 so it's a 3 day course and 3 days not being paid ...

So that's over £1000 cost to me

I have just read through all this, not been paying attention lately. I am staggered to be honest, what a load of B****ks. They complain about Dave down the pub doing stuff, and then they make honest sparks pay out over £1000 to remain in a scam. I reckon I am going to stick it and just do non-notifiable jobs now, winding down anyway. If I suddenly forget and do a CU change I can always risk it, have any sparks ever been done for not notifying???

Agree with you sparksburnout, its -------s me paying all this money and larger companies not paying a lot more. I'm gonna jump ship.

Re the notification, well not disagree as such, but it can back fire on the client. In the last 6mths I've had three customers ring me up after replacement Certs's and/or Compliance Certs, as they are in the process of selling their houses and been asked to produce them and had not kept the originals safe.

So if its not done as per the Building Regs etc, it can leave people in the ----.

Just imagine, maybe. Get one of my old apprentices to supervise and sort me a certificate out. ;)

It's like IPF said, why the hell do those of us who did the exam before AMD3 have to do a complete new reg's course for the best part of £500 it's ****ng disgusting. I am only part time now and it's just not worth it to be honest. I am going to wait and see what Stroma say next spring when my assessment is due, they might give existing members a certain amount of time but if they don't I am going to abandon ship and just do non-notifiable stuff. And another thing, whats this "whole new" section 8 all about?? Is it relevant to most of us? The whole thing is a joke if you ask me.

What now annoys me now is that the courses have been dumbed down to just teaching where to find and navigating the book, maybe I was lucky when I went to a local college for my 17th they explained the regs as we went through the book.

True enough, but not just the whole book, just the changes in the 18th would be nice.

If these schemes put their hands in their pockets they could do some shortened training on-line to come across with the changes, I would of been wiling to pay a small fee. But like with Certsure, training is part of their revenue, so thats not going to happen.

Perhaps we should come up with another petition to the Government about it, including Part P. Could try the House of Lords, as they are living on the ragged edge at the mo

No doubt my scheme will ask me to do it. I will say 'of course I will'. The next year they will ask me if i have done it. I will say 'no' and say I will do it the next year. They will say 'ok'. The next year they will ask me if I have done it. I will say 'no' and say I will do it the next year. They will say 'you better had do'. The next year they will ask me if I have done it. I will say 'no, as we're on to the 19th now, but of course I'll get that done for you next year'. :)
