thanks for reply thats what I thought the person who has done this has wired up a landing light to 2 dimables 1 down stairs and one up. am i right in thinking the only way to do this is a dimable 2w switch up or downstairs and the other switch must be a normal 2w switch.
 
I dont want to hijack this thread but I've heard you can get problems with dimmers being unreliable can anyone throw some, light" he he" on this?
 
dimmers have max and min ratings 40 to 250 w or 40 to 400 w as long as you stay within this they are ok
also people try to dim non dimmable lights this can damadge switch and or fittings

you can just change the dimmer at one end wiyh a fixed load modual looks
like a dimmer but its a switch if you have brass ect you can keep it looking the same
