The red light came on in my son's Renault Panel Van and after he had taken the sump guard of he found a wire loosely held in by what he described as wax. He pulled I out and stuffed it back in and the red light went out. He got to work about four miles away and the red light was on again I would welcome some advice because I have never com across a wire held into an alternator with wax.

don't think its wax joining the wire, think its like waxy oil, waterproofing wax. scrape some off you might find a missing connection.

may be a kind of crimp connector, possibly for charge indicator on the dashboard, clean up the gunk with wd40, tighten up the crimp with pliers and re-fix, make sure it wont come off easily... otherwise it would be a bolt and it lost its nut and been held by greasy dirt, re-fix with nut. picture will help.

They sometimes use a wax type adhesive where the thin wires come out of the windings, he may have broken one of these wires off. You can try very gently cleaning the way away and see if there's a broken copper wire/strand in there somewhere. If there is it will need a very delicate soldering job to repair it.

Maybe some photos would be helpful if you can attach some.
