Hi, everyone.

At 38 years old in Aberdeen (Scotland), I am now leaving (partly by choice) the oil field. I am now looking to retrain as an electrician. I have an HNC from about 20 years ago in electrical engineering, and done a bunch of DIY.

Signed up to do the 18th Edition course, and now wondering: what the heck will I do after that?

Prob try and find work as Electricians Mate, even unpaid, to gain experience for a while. Wish me luck!

Hi Gavin,

I’m in a very similar situation to you in Scotland. I gather the route to become a qualified Electrician is different in Scotland compared to England. Most of the fast track courses wont qualify you to certify work up here? I hope I have that correct.

What have you done so far and any luck getting work experience?

Cheers

Agreed. The colleges offer a different and shorter course for older apprentices depending upon their background. But to get on any SECTT course you’ll need to be sponsored by your employer.
