The missus was watching Big Brother and remarked how she liked a light they have in the house, I had a look and it's just a bit of conduit and some boxes.

Daft as it sounds I'm pricing a domestic job where they want conduit in certain places.

Must admit, I prefer conduit in conservatory installs over t&e in YT2 where chasing cables in is not practical.

Just looks better/neater - maybe I'm a trendsetter. (Lol)

I'd use a good thread lock compound to any threads you don't want to move!! lol!!

Think i'd be mounting it on a wood/metal plinth or whatever with a felt base, ...if you're not keen on the thing as it stands, scratching surfaces. Id use the plain cast box lids for the outrigger boxes, instead the spouted box lids shown...

Who's selling these things at a very cheeky (to say the least) £294???

perhaps i should knock some up and set up a stall in the new proposed craft fair in the 1976 hall at Leeds city markets....

Looks like it's wired in pyro.... but.... I bet it's not! :wink5:

Thinking about it, dave, there was a pyro gland that did look quite like that, in the 70's. It was crimped to the cable rather than screwed. Didn't last for long, rubbish idea.

It's a pity the Internet wasn't about when the old hands were making sledges at Xmas.

regarding the micc glands they also brought out pots that were shrunk on using a gas blowtorch as the pot was warmed up it shrunk onto the micc all you then had to do was slide on the sleeving
they were withdrawn too altho i thought they were great

Thats got to add a ton at least onto each fitting !

My brother actually started making stuff like this not so long back. Not electrical, but making shelves and bathroom fittings from inch plumbing pipe. Looks pretty good when done right. He couples it with oiled chunky slabs of solid oak and elm and it looks right nice.

You'd have to do like they do on The Apprentice Trev. Hire a posh shopfront for the day, put on a suit, and offer "real" coffee to all your clients.

I once made a light out of an old roadwork lamp (the ones that used to contain paraffin burners). Sold it for more than a hundred quid. Amazing what folks will pay for 'designer' accessories which are in fact just stuff made out of bin-material.

I did see something on one of those DIY programmes a while back where they were refurbing old industrial metal light fittings as they sold for hundreds each.
Think someone mentioned them on here too.

There was a fad for selling old rank-strand theatre lights as industrial chic or whatever they called it, th ekind of lights that were installed din every school and village hall for years. We made a few bob selling them when we ripped them out on refurbs!

Yep, this is exactly the sort of old tat, that will be on offer at these craft stores, and with those ridiculous price tags too!!
