Consumer Unit query

Hi all,

I understand the location of a consumer unit should be accessible and of a reasonable height. I know this makes perfect sense and ideally be done for new or existing but does it only apply to new builds?

For example, to position the consumer unit within a reasonable height in a hallway would mean using surface trunking or steel conduit from the meter for the tails. Obviously doesn't look the best if house is being renovated. Could it be placed in a cupboard higher up with the meter and main fuse?

If it's board change then you have no choice but I mean rewire.


Also, this may be a daft question but when you fix a consumer unit, why are they normally fixed to a wooden board? Is this required or can you fix straight to brickwork?

New build domestic , 1500 top of consumer unit. Yes you can fix directly to brickwork.

I think with a re-wire as long as you don't put things back any worse then all good. So you can put the board back in the same place.

You need to apply common sense with respect to the height of the CU when doing a rewire. I don't care what anyone says but I wouldn't be placing a CU at the Part M height!

As for the tails it all depends on where they come from and how best to "deal" with them.
