Im posting it in here as im on with this matter with the company who make them, basically the units are fire rated gu10 recessed spots the lamp is retained by a twist action cap with a fitted sprung clamp to grip the lamp in place.... here's the design flaw, if a fitting dosn't have a lamp in it is possible for lampholder to drop onto the lamp retaining clamp at an angle letting the end of it enter the live terminal on the lampholder thus making the fitting live when switched on but because its classII it dosn't operate any protective device

I found out the hard way :( that i had a live fitting but at least the RCD works....

The company under the spotlight (see what i did there lol) are ringing me back in the morning as i just missed them so will post how they respond.... IMHO if its class 2 it shouldn't be able to come live metal work because of a design flaw.

Working Live then? :)

They could argue, in normal service ie with lamp fitted, the fitting complies to Class II.
Interesting to see what they say.

Cant comment on other brands, if the lampholder is guided or retained in any manor then it wouldn't be an issue this brand have loose hanging lampholders and all though its not too easy for it to happen but it still did, ive been playing about with it and ive managed to achieve the same outcome on a few occasions by fitting the twist cap without a lamp in the fitting.

I was wiping a mark off the base and no lamp was in.... even i would have thought it unecessary to go through the isolation procedures after all it is classII..... and the fitting will exist in 2 states - with lamp and without so it classII rating should cover both senerio's.

Most gu10 landholders are loose, can u imagine the hassle of a fixed twist lock!!, is it a 3 letter brand or one that begins with an a and ends with an a?

Its neither of your guesses Rauer but im waiting for the response first and il happily detail the brand after but would be interesting to see if other brands with twist lock can fall foul of this if any of you have a similar design id be interested to know if this issue isnt just tied with the brand i have as it could create in the worst case senerio a product withdrawal as they cant lay claim to the double insulation if part of the product itself can inadvertantly make the metal housing live!!!!

"RCD saves Electrician on DI downlight shocker"

Another tick for RCDs even when used with DI stuff.

Sorry DW just made me giggle a bit - hope you weren't standing on a wobbly stool.

Never considered that risk before with them, will watch out from now on !
