Hi there,

Just a quick question. Does a main protective bonding conductor require UV protection when run outside?

I am under the impression that this is not a requirement as such, but if possible, it should be considered. Especially if installing a smaller sized conductor.

I am running a main protective bonding conductor to some structural steelwork some 180m away from the service intake. 120mm supply, so 35mm bonding conductor (TN-C-S earthing arrangement).

As it's a large CSA, mechanical protection and corrosion protection is not a problem; and even if UV rays did break the insulation down, it wouldn't be a problem.

I will run this in ducting anyway, but I just thought I'd ask the question as I we often see bonding conductors run outside without any protection.

Thanks again guys for your valuable time and knowledge.

Let’s face it, if the sun broke the insulation down to the point it fell off.
what would the risk be?

A lot of external bonding or earth conductors are bare copper strips.

If mechanical damage is likely, then run some steel conduit… but all UV will do is fade the green and yellow.
