Had a interesting scenario crop up this week when was asked if it was ok to take a new 10mm equipotential wire from gas pipe to outside earth stake onto a new earth clamp below the existing 16mm earth conductor clamp rather than go all the way back to the MET. If not ok can someone suggest a reg number to read.

Many thanks

Robert

At a stretch, you could go with 542.1.4 which states that for a TT system the main earthing terminal shall be connected via an earthing conductor to an earth electrode.

542.4.1 In every installation, a main earthing terminal shall be provided to connect the following to the earthing conductor:

The cpc's

The protective bonding conductors

Functional earths

LPC's

Thanks IQ so your view would be that as long as there is an MET and an earth conductor lead from the MET it shouldn't be a problem going from gas pipe to earth stake on TT as long as there is a main earth lead to stake from MET.

No, the reg's state firstly that an installation MUST have a main earthing terminal.

Then, that any main protective bonding conductors (gas, water, structural steel etc) must be connected to the main earthing terminal.

Your earth electrode is the 'means of earthing', not the main earthing terminal.
